Consider a handheld if you haven't got a fixed one yet.

Works well for me, but I guess not for everybody.

When I had my Navara, I bought one of the Oricoms that had all the controls on the microphone.

I then mounted the box itself under the centre console in front of the gear stick.

It used to get fairly warm on the trans tunnel, but it worked like that well for 5 years!

From memory I installed mine in the dash where there was a small glove compartment. In the D-Max I installed the type that goes under the dash somewhere and all the controls are on the hand piece.

KB, when I bought my current 2004 Patrol, it came fitted with an Outback roof console (www.4wdinteriors.com/).
With my MQ, I installed the radio on the side of the console but it collected lots of dust, bits of nibbles, etc & it wasn't in the easiest position to use. When I replaced the MQ with a GQ, I bought a roof console (Dept of Interior brand) & fitted that.

Electric brake controller instructions will often mention that at least 300mm should be left between the units.

As to whether a mounted unit with the aerial on the bull bar is safer than a hand held unit that has its aerial close to your head (RF radiation issues), I believe the judges are still fighting over that point.
RF can be nasty stuff & questions are continually raised. After all we all want mobile coverage, mobile broadband but "we cannot have the transmitters near schools, shopping centres can we?"

All the controls are in the hand set. The box of works can be hidden away where ever you like and where it is convenient to get the antennae to. There is a speaker in both the hand piece and in the box of works, so keep that in mind too.
There are other brands with a similar layout, so shop around for the features that you like.

In my last couple of patrols I suffered the same problem...Where do you mount the brute? In the GQ, I mounted at the rear of the console. Was pretty good. In the GU I mounted under dash at the hard left. My left leg just touched it when my foot rested on the footrest. Was OK and got by. In the Y62 I purchased a new unit with all controls on the microphone.The unit itself is mounted way up under the dash not far from the Redarc controller body. Hope this helps. Ian

While not a Patrol, I purchased a new console for the 2005 Navara, cut out the (rather useless IMO) "pocket" below the radio, and mounted the UHF unit in there.

I still have the original console, and will reinstall it when I sell.

Since I could, I also installed a couple of "always on" power sockets (aka ciggy lighter sockets) in the new console, so I now have 3 power sources for such things as dashcam, phone charger etc.

This is where mine lives. The old one ceased to function so I've purchased a new 80 channel jobbie.
