Ours complies with CMCA rules & most self contained sites - you must have a shut-off valve on the grey water outlet connection at the vehicle so no water drips out after disconnecting (we have a shut - off valves on the outlet connection & at the connecting hose from the 40lt tank so no water will drip from the tank connecting hose either.
The only place I have ever actually seen that requires a grey tank rather than a portable tank is the camp in Cooktown. Portable tanks seem to be accepted in the vast majority of places.
G'day bowser, add Waverly Creek Rest area, north of Rockhampton QLD to the list of 'on board' grey water tanks only. I was there a couple of years back and a ranger came in checking and a couple were told to leave. I was asked to put a cap on the end of my outlet incase it dripped. No problem as I had one anyway.
That all said, I called in again coming back to VIC from Townsville last year for a night and no ranger around and a few were using buckets and a couple nothing. You could also see stains on the bitumen parking areas where people had just let run on ground.
The area is all bitumen.
Great spot for a one night stand, by the way.

Now !!!! we have a 50 litre grey water tank (Portable) and during our 9 months trip we never used it or were challenged. But it sits at the rear of the van wheels, so it is our security if needed as we head off by the weekend on our winter trip up to Nth Qld and the outback.
Will a 40lt portable grey water tank. Of proper design and containment be ok for self contained sites.
You did not say how long you wanted to stay. The old self containment rules required 10 litres capacity per person for no shower fitted or 20 litres with a shower. We cope well for three nights without showering (an APC is good enough for us when out in the bush or staging.)
