None of them will work in very cold conditions. We find ours is fairly inefficient at heating and carry a small electric fan heater which we use on powered sites if its cold, it heats up the van in minutes.
The heating element in our 10 year old Dometic unit burnt out, apparently a common problem, and the service technician advised me to remove the element because ,a: they were no longer available in that model, b: expensive if a substitute could be obtained, c: were very inefficient, c: use a portable electric heater instead, which we did. Tha a/c works well and the portable heater works a treat on cold nights. We can still run the unit on fresh air if needed.
An air con is no more than a heat pump. It pumps heat from one space to another. Pretty logical to understand that the heating function does not work in very cold conditions.
In very cold conditions you need some source of heat, like, the element in a fan heater.

We too have a reverse cycle air conditioner, only use it to cool, for heating if there is power a fan heater works a treat, if no power then we turn on the diesel heater.
That is very interesting. We are currently travelling and are in Mudgee and the nights are cold and we have experienced the a/c not wanting to start early on a cold morning.
Later in the day it always starts.I never connected the dots.
Thanks for the topic.
