Inquiry Poptops

Hi everyone.  We are in the process of looking at caravans and are unsure whether to go for a poptop or a caravan.  If we go for a poptop just wondering if the top section that goes up makes noise when the wind blows and if it does how noisy is it?

Thank you

G'day Robruno and welcome to the forum.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit. In my opinion a pop top is a tent with wheels, harder to heat when cold. Solid walls and ceilings work better for us but a lot will depend on your anticipated use.  Very hard to give an opinion on such a personal item.  Not sure on your noise question as we havn't used a pop top.

Welcome to the gang Robruno, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I chose a full aluminium teepee cos I live in it and have seen people have to fold the top section of a pop top down in strong wind. I would say there is some movement in the vinyl as well. Heaps of pop tops out there but then there are heaps of full vans as well.

It's all a personal choice really and no one can really advise. Think long and hard before you buy and all should be good.

Mmmm, that makes me not much help I spose. Sorry.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Yes, they can be very noisy to the point that we have had to shift camp to a more sheltered spot.

But they also wear out and need replacing in 10 - 15 years - budget $1,000 to $2,000.

They also let a lot of heat escape in cold conditions and a heater will need to be at least double the capacity. And of course, they will let a lot of heat in in very hot weather.

Add to that that they need a stronger wall structure otherwise the van is not nearly as strong, so there are virtually no weight savings.

Then you have to put them up and pull them down every time you stop. Some are not easy.

My advise is stick with a full height van. The supposed fuel savings are minimal.

Cheers,

Peter
