Just bought a new Mu-X but they have two small extra seats in the back takeing up space needed for draws and camping gear there easily removed,the cars registered in NSW ,anyone here have a similar car that might know of any legalities ,there not structural as far as I can see, just a few set screws and there out....
Technically you are converting the vehicle carrying capacity as specified on your VIN - You are legally required to have car re-engineered to remove seats, then notify Services NSW of modifications..

I've taken the rear seats out of my three Patrols & refitted them when I've sold (two). The current ones will go back in when my GU goes.
There has been the odd occasion when relatives have visited that I've had to put them back in. Having to get the compliance plate modified each time would be a pain in the neck.
It is for this reason & the fact that holes in the panels will show that a friend bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee but the car is too small & too limited for my liking.

Some cases depend upon whether you need tools to remove them or not. I would check with RMS and when you do advise them if you can do the removal with or without tools. In some jurisdictions, it is permissible to remove seats temporarily if tools are not needed to do the job.
The bottom line is - ask RMS.

There held in with set screws Peter and there already removed ,there not structural,there stupid things in my view unless your carrying around a tribe of kids. From what I can garner so far its ok to remove them ,provided your not carrying seven people in the car... theres a bit of on the net that suggests its no problem removeing them in nsw ,but I will check with the rta,If theres any problems I will bolt them back in I posted this wondering if anyone on the site had removed there seats just curious...

The seats have been out of my Patrol fo 8 years, I still have them. The Patrol has an engineering certificate for the motor, the engineer didnt worry about the seats, the retractable seatbelts are still in.

Thanks for your reply rgren but I will still check with the rta imagine if your insurance used this as an excuse not to pay up...
I'm in NSW. So long as those seats and seat belts are out then it just gets registered as a 5 seater instead of 7. No engineering required.
That means I will have to contact the rta and have it re registered ,and contact them again when the car is sold to put it back to a 7 seater yep will check with the rta and see whats involved if it costs a mint the seats go back in,Iam going a bit over the top probably but with my luck ,In case of an accident I dont want give the insurance a chance not to pay or have other legal problems....

I talk to insurance every year, ask about everything, time and date it and get the persons name and number. Think Ive got it covered.
