G'day Cutto and welcome to the forum. Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit. We are based in WA so cannot comment about that neck of the woods..
Mt Isa is a very pleasant place good facilities and shops. It is a very strong Union town with shops closing 12.00 Noon on Saturdays and other Union picnic days, etc. More laid back than the rest of Qld.

It's a nice enough town with a few things to see and do depending on your interests. As Possum3 said above, no shops, including supermarkets, open on Saturday afternoon or Sunday, but you can buy alcohol, and the medical centre is open seven days a week. Unfortunately there's been a wave of petty crime occurring for the past couple of months at caravan parks. All of the CPs have reported people "loitering with intent" on their premises with a few break-ins reported every week, including my motorhome about a month ago. Luckily they didn't take much of consequence, just a couple of small items they could fit into their pockets, while my laptop, tablet, Kindle and other goodies were left untouched so I consider myself rather lucky in that respect. The two police officers who came around said they are now specifically including the CPs on their rounds.

Welcome to the gang Cutto, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I listen to what other travellers recommend and like to visit those places but that said everyone is different so if I haven't been there I just go and see for myself. Some places I would go back again but others not, the same goes for the recommended places.
As I said, everyone is different so just go see for yourself and enjoy.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

We visited Mt Isa on one of our trips stayed at the first Caravan park on the right coming into town from Cloncurry it is accross the road from the TAFE college found it a good place to stay for 2 night and a bit out of town . We visit because we were heading up to the Gulf and wanted to have a look , When you are going anywhere it helps to do a google on what's happening at that time , Mt Isa is no different to any regional town the shop close at midday saturday and closed Sunday . Didn't find any problem with those union people .

They generally don't break and enter. They just enter and steel. They are mostly after cash.
The golden rule when towns like that is to secure the door when you are not in sight of it and do not have any thing of value placed where they can slit a fly screen and easily insert an arm and grab it. The "not in sight of the door" includes when you are asleep and snoozing. Most people reckon that they will wake if someone enters the van. However when you go into the deep sleep shortly after retiring very few actually do get disturben by an intruder. The loiterers wait until you have been asleep for a bit and then quietly enter, snatch something and retreat quietly. There have been a couple of times that ahs happened to every van around me whilst in Mt Isa Parks.
If you follow those instructions when in those parks you will be perfectly safe. Enjoy Mt Isa, Broken Hill, Tennant Creek, Dubbo and all those similar towns.
