Gell Cell batteries.

Just wondering, do any members on here have gel cell batteries, factory fitted as their house batteries. Particularly Jayco owners, and how are they performing

I think it would be fair to say, factory installed Gel batteries would be as rare as hens teeth. What prompted Jayco to install these is anyone's guess, they would normally be either wet cell or AGM, the problem being, they can be easilly ruined by excessive voltage when being charged.

One of the advantages of Gel batteries, is, if they are well managed have a 10year plus life span. Looks like known else on here has them fitted, lucky them.

If you really know what you are doing, Gel electrolyte lead acid batteries are fine for RV use. They are very sensitive to higher rate charging and discharge loads that will cause gas bubble to form between the gel electrolyte and the plate surface. This has the same effect for that bit of the plate as running a flooded cell out of water/electrolyte, permanent sulphation damage that can't be reversed by plate surface shedding the way AGM and flooded cell lead acid batteries can. A constant light current charging and light current discharging is what they were designed for when used in a cyclic type system, not the sudden loads often seen on an RV house battery.
