Kangaroo Island

We are going to Kangaroo Island on Sunday for a week.

My question is, do we stay in Penneshaw or Kingscote?

Caravan Park, powered site.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated .

Regards.

Hetho

Kingscote is the better of the two,  Spend a couple of days at the West KI caravan park.  We stayed at Penneshaw the last night before the return trip.

The Western KI CP and the American River Campground have better reviews in WikiCamps and the prices are a little better as well.

Take drinking water with you to West KI van park. Water is from a dam and is not the best quality.

Hetho, could we have a brief report on your trip? Where did you end up staying?

Hi PeterD.

Sorry for the slow reply but have been out of range for the last week.

KI was great and well worth the $ to get Tug and van onto the Island.

We had our first night free at the Penneshaw Cp, with the island transfer, however it looked a bit ordinary and lots of mosquitoes in the ablution block which itself was quite old, but clean.

We continued to Kingscote and stayed there for the 8 days. Reasonably nice park, good facilities with a newly renovated ablution block. Great camp kitchen, friendly staff and Kingscote has all facilities.

We toured the whole island with day trips, with the west end being the most beautiful and spectacular. Lots of nice bays and scenery along the way. Plenty of seals, rock formations and history.

However, by far the nicest park we saw was KI West. Emu Bay was beautiful but very exposed to the elements, American River was a bit spartan and the oysters were an insane price.

There are 6 powered camp grounds on the island, some with only 4 sites but plenty of unpowered. Most locations have toilets, gazebo and parking. We were impressed and have and will recommend. The ferry staff were fantastic; Im 13 mtrs in total and it was not a problem.

Emu Ridge had a fantastic Marron salad and they are the eucalyptus distillery as well.

We hit all the tourist attraction, some good, others not; but we thoroughly enjoyed the adventure.

Tug and van and 2 adults return was $720.00.

Hopefully this will give you a bit of an idea.

Regards.

Hetho
