Rubber tread still but a different variety, my wife and I are looking to purchase a good good " quality" pair of lightweight hiking boots each , has anyone bought some and where apart from the big rip off outdoor stores . We are off to Tassie for the summer and intend doing a lot of bush walking and hiking .
Your profile doesn't say where you live but in Melbourne Paddy Pallin are good:

They have a decent range and know what they are talking about.
Expect to spend at least $250 a pair. One thing you need in the bush is good boots 'cause if they let you down then you're not going anywhere. Talk to them about socks too.

For Tassie, it is important that the boots are waterproof, even if you only go walking in the summer. The weather can change in an instant and there are a lot of boggy areas even when the weather is perfect.. Scout shops will give good advise.
Tassie is a walker's paradise. Apart from the well known spots, our favourite is probably the Walls of Jerusalem. You need to allow 2 nights or more. Was not as many people as many other areas.
Apart from the 500m climb up to the plateau from the car park, the walking is quite easy. We only spent 2 nights, it snowed on what would have been the 3rd. This was late March.
