Plastic Drum Washing Machine.

Having insufficient space for a washing machine but being too lazy to hand wash I was contemplating a partial automation solution. Get a 30ish litre plastic drum with a screw on lid big enough to load my clothes / water. Build a 4 roller cradle to sit the above drum on with the axis on the horizontal. Have 2 of the rollers powered to rotate the drum like a gem tumbler. Once washed ring out or just drip dry the clothes. Has anyone done / seen such a contraption?

Welcome to the gang Hanna, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I know you said you are "too lazy" to wash by hand and yes, it is that W word but I Live on the road full time and most of my washing just needs a rinse really so by hand it is. I use a good brand wool wash so no need to rinse. I ring by hand and hang out on line to dry. Works well and if done every few days only takes a few minutes. When I want to do bedding I use a laundromat then, but add a purpose made disinfectant to the final rinse. Canastin or Detol make good ones. I did start doing by hand but decided it was too difficult and really lived up to that W word that is forbidden in my world.

If I do have to do any of that W word I always do it during Grey Nomad w.....g hours, 10.00am to midday with a compulsory one hour break.

Sorry, I just can't bring myself to say that W word.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

A warm welcome from me also, Extraordinary Rendition

I have not seen what you described, a gem tumbler type washing machine

I also have no room for a caravan washing machine, and would also have no room for a gem tumbler type one

While travelling solo, hand washing gives me something to do

Travelling with the boss, we use Laundromats while free camping, and Caravan Park Laundries for larger items

The best I have see so far, is the bucket and plunger, (in the picture put up by Baz421)
I am told, by those who use them, that if the lid is tight enough, the washing is done, (through vibration), while they are travelling

Tony Bev. I am jealous of my space too. The idea is to have the rollers set in the floor out of the way someplace. Only when the drum is actually washing something is it used in situ. Otherwise it will be packed away with other stuff stored inside it. I am pretty well advanced with the design. I need to source some components, build and test it. If it works I will write it up and post links to my minds blog.

I am sure that others will be interested, in the end product, Hanna

A picture, and where you obtained the various parts, (after you finish your project), would be good

Tony Bev. these things generally take some time to build and prove so I will write up a proper DIY report on completion.
