Recently we have picked up an intermittent fault on the van. When we connect to mains water, sometimes the water tanks will fill by themselves. Wondering if we have a non return valve issue or could the water pump be allowing a backflow of water to the tanks? Any ideas? TIA

Most caravan manufacturers are tight wads and rely upon the non return valve in the water pump.
You need to put a separate NRV between the tanks and water pump.
Look at this - Design Your Own RV or Caravan Plumbing System - You will note there are two non-return valves in the system at the bottom of the page. As Bill said, some manufacturers, particularly Jayco, do not have the one after the pump. This causes the valves in the pump to fail and allow water to flow back to the tank. Insert the valve and it will stop the flow back. If the pump is damaged too much you may experience the pump cycling when all the taps are off. In that case you will have to repair or replace the pump.
