Gas burner start up problem.

Your Gas burner may be fitted with a Flame Failure Device which is faulty, ie if the flame goes out in normal operation this device will switch off the gas, or could be a problem with the switch mechanism. If either I suggest its a Gas fitters job.

Check to see that all the Gas jets around the Gas Burner are actually lit. If the flame/Jet by the Thermocouple (Flame Detector) is not lit or very weak, Or if the thermoouple is bent !. Flame dose not touch, or get detected by the Themocouple and shuts the gas off when the knob is released.

Try using a GAS MATCH LIGHTER when you Switch the burner knob on.

1 Light the Gas Match Lighter and direct the flame on the thermocouple heating it. (the little thing sticking up along side the burner usually at the back)

2 Push the gas burner knob in and the gas ring will light up tun to the top setting. Keep the Gas Match Lighter lit heating the Themocouple.

3 Keeping the Gas lighter on the themocouple release the gas ring knob.

If the gas ring remains lit while you have the lighter on the thermocouple then goes out when you remove the Gas Lighter, there will be something wrong with the flame "from that gas port onto the thermocouple". It may be blocked.

Or the Themocouple may be bent and out of the gas flame.

I had a similar problem. a wire underneath was off, spade connector, cost me $50 to get a gas fitter to find and reconnect, m cutlery draw is under the stove and knocked the wire off

Hi Colin,

The problem with your cooker not lighting up and staying lit when the gas is on and the ignition is sparking

is the thermocouple is faulty and needs replacing you can buy them off eBay or through Dometic

If you are a handy person it is something you can do yourself as you need to take the cooker out and dis assemble it

to get thermocouple out

they are different lengths and styles

the thermocouple connects to the back of the ignition knob and runs to the side off the gas jet

What type \ make off cook top is it ??

Hi cjt55,

Might be a long shot, but there is a screw behind the knob to adjust the flame. If yours lights as you say, is the flame very low? Pull the knob off and use a small phillips screwdriver in the hole to adjust.

We had a new van and all the burners were set very high, when you want to simmer something on low, it was too fierce, so I lit the flame and removed the knob and adjusted the flame down to the right height.

A trick a Plumber showed me.
