Vinyl replacement on awning

Hello everyone,

My vinyl on the awning is in a rapid self destruction mode. I patched the frayed sections with white Gaffa tape from Bunnings, but more & more is going (mainly fragmenting).

I read in "Search" of how to do the replacement, etc. For members who have been down this road and I assume there is a difference in vinyls suitable (cheap vs expensive), can anyone recommend a long lasting vinyl to use? While the van is under a carport normally, the morning tropical sun does shine on the awning roll.

I've seen an advert for Austrong Vinyl - welded, not stitched. Are there any problems with welding? I haven't been to a local upholsterer yet - possibly next port of call after here.

In "Search" I saw a post by erad who said his awning (from eBay) was basically dark blue & was hot to sit under. When I had a canopy made for my tinny a long time ago, it was suggested that I should use a darker blue as it let minimal sun through in comparison to white. I didn't notice it being hotter under the blue.

I was asking my canvas repairer about this because l noticed he had a awning on one of his work benches. He said awnings mostly were not UV stable, hence the sundamage. He has some vinyl made in Australia with UV protection but it only comes in solid colours. No flash colour patterns. I think he said it was for truck side curtains, anyway he rekons it lasts much longer. I'm not fashion conscious so a single colour awning doesn't bother me.

I went down this path a few years ago. I found on fleabay an awning listed for my Carefree awning - complete with the roller as well (the old roller wasn't in great shape at the time). This listing was cheaper than just the fabric from another fleabay seller, so I bought that one. I had to fit it to the roof of my van, and also the legs, but that was relatively easy. You just need 2 people - one at each end to take the weight. I guy's fleabay listing was Bruce-Eddie, and his mobile number is 0416 736 420. Don't know if he is still in business, or for that matter where he is/was. Give the number a call and see what has has to offer (if anything now).

Best idea is to make a claim on insurance and have the whole thing replaced. They usually like a picture showing where the sharp end of that small branch went through.

That is not a good idea at all.

A. Its fraud.

And I do not like insurance companies but when things go accidently wrong its nice to have monetary back up, not because our awning material is a bit off colour from normal wear and tear.

Our replacement awning material came with the Hino when we bought it from Homeless. He bought it some yrs back from a US Ebay mob at a fraction of what the locals wanted. We have only had it up a bit over a yr so hard to tell how long it will last, but the cost difference meant we could replace 2 vinyl sections and still be in front $$ wise. Not a hard job to do, but it does require 2 people .... and your wits about you so you don't wind it on backwards .....

Similar to erad, we purchased a Carefree awning with free delivery from RV Parts Express comes with the roller and for 2 people takes about 30 minutes to install ( local canvas/awning repairer could not buy it for that price from his distributor) checked their online prices 11ft awning $666, bigger awnings up to $800+.

Of course you must have the Carefree arms etc.
