Fiat Ducato automatic transmission reservoir

Good morning all,

Has anyone experienced a problem with the small translucent reservoir fitted on the near side of the firewall adjacent to the main transmission reservoir in a 2011 3 litre 180 Ducato.

My understanding is the this reservoir should contain brake fluid, however, the reservoir is not retaining the fluid for long.

I wonder if there is a kit to service the actuating cylinder and I would be most grateful for any advice  if anyone has experienced this problem.

The reservoir is not very accessible and I am contemplating extending the connecting hose to mount it higher on the firewall .

Need to fix the problem first!

Hi Dncwell

Sorry that I can not help you, as I have a full manual gearbox, of an earlier model Fiat Ducato

My understanding is that very few Fiat Ducato owners do their own servicing, and that there are not many tips available

Hopefully someone will come along and enlighten us

When you do find the leak, (you mention the actuating cylinder), it would be good if you came back, and posted the method of repairing it, which may help others in the future

Thank you Tony,

I shall certainly get to the fix for this and post.

As an aside I spoke to a couple traveling in a Ducato today as they were in town, their reservoir was very low and they had no idea that it existed.

You could be right that Fiat owners dont do their own service!

Hi

There is a chance it may be for clutch fluid for the atm gearbox -  Google     Technical: Comfort-matic clutch fluid level - The Fiat Forum

Many thanks David,

The reservoir in question is indeed the smaller of the two shown in Techno100s photograph.

I have not experienced the fluid being expelled via the breather cap and although the fluid is not being retained in the reservoir the vehicle is changing gears quite seamlessly, have just completed 600km.

Shall have to remove the cylinder and explore.

thank you again for your advice.

Best regards, Neil Creswell.

Neil,

Has anybody considered this may be a form of expansion tank. Similar to the

one on some ride on zero turn mowers.

Thank you Larry,

I have not considered it as an expansion tank. Fiat instructions would seem to indicate that the reservoir is to be filled to within the graduation marks on the reservoir wall.

If it is an expansion tank then as it is empty it will allow air into a hydraulic system.

Will have to investigate

Best regards, Neil.

Hi,
There are 2 Fiat Forums that I have come across, I suggest you ask your question there, the FiatForum...... Ducato seems to be a lot more active than the other one.

the reservoir is for the clutch slave cylinder inside the clutch housing . if it using fluid it may have a leaky slave cylinder . you could check too see if there is any fluid coming out between the clutch housing and the engine block if so it is gearbox out to replace the actuating slave cylinder. our ducats was a 160 2008

Many thanks Mark and Kerry
I cannot see any leaks between the housing and the block and I have relocated the reservoir so as to be able to monitor
the fluid level more easily - hopefully I will not have to remove the gearbox!
Photo herewith.
Thank you again, Neil,
