Lightning Ridge to Clermont

I think I stayed at Lightning Ridge a bit too long, and I'm getting really itchy feet. More so that it is getting increasingly wintery here. Temps close to zero before the sunrise, very cold nights, and days about 15 to 18 degrees max. Not to my liking. Someone else going that way by chance? Any good free camping in the area? I'd be grateful for all info. I'll be going with my Holden Rodeo 2.8l turbo diesel towing a 16 feet (4.88 m) late 60-ies Viscount. Hope the weather there is warm now. May be I'd do also a bit of Gold Detecting? Later to Northern WA, Kununura, or may be back to Victoria and old good Greens Lakes.

Darwin is about the only place that has "acceptable" climate for next two months - Head up to beat the winter chill.

Possum is correct to some extent. Inland min temps will be low for a while. Free camps are all over the place outside Clermont but I'm not sure if any are near fossicking reserves.

I am currently in Broken Hill heading north through Lightning Ridge to Gladstone, Townsville, Darwin, Port Headland, Kalgoorlie then home to Victoria end of October. Yes it is cold atm but I am set up well for free camping with 12v gas heating, wood to burn, thermal undies, good jacket beanie and gloves and good quality blankets. I also carry a oil fin heater for when I am in a CP. I find it invaluable as it keeps the van toasty warm 24 hrs a day and it ensures I get my money's worth from the fees. As for the free camps ... I study my route on wiki camps and look at the free camps available, read comments and look at the pictures and Mark the better one's as a favourite and decide when I get there.

Getting a bit cool here in Qld at the moment. Negative 0.5 in Maryborough this morning. Major news for the locals, who are in a bit of shock. Forecast minimums for Clermont for the next 5 days is between 1 and 3 degrees. cry

Possum is right. I am currently in Darwin at Robbie Robbins Reserve. Daytime temps for next 7 days vary between 31 and 33 and night time down to 16 or 17. Perfect.

I'm at Seaforth, just north of Mackay, so low 20's during the day going down to around 10 overnight. You'd need to do a bit of work with WikiCamps to find a good (completely) free camping site. Mine is a council run site right on the beach at $22 per night ($153 per week).

Sounds lovely Marshall. Right on the beach for $22/night looks like good value. What's the town like?
