Probably would have purchased a motorhome instead of the caravan and 4wd set up. Caravan turned out to be a disaster and the 4wd a little disappointing, although the second attempt was more successful.
i have had a camper trailer and a large caravan, rented a motorhome in germany, and lived on a 40ft yacht for 5 years. This time i am building a tent trailer, a trailer to carry the stuff and a tent to sleep in, i like camping rather than taking my home with me. If it rains stay in a motel.
There are always minor things that you would change, but after having been a caravanner since childhood and now in my mid sixties, there isn't much that I would change with my current rig.
Probably the only major change would be to go to a trade type canopy tray with lift up side doors on my Ranger rather than the well body and fibreglass canopy I currently have. Would make accessing the rear of the ute so much easier. Had a look at a few at a recent field day I went to and am even considering a swap on the current vehicle.
I'd go a little bigger with the van. 17'6 is a tad on the small side for 2 adults and 2 dogs. The dogs have learned to take avoiding action during our walks in the "wee hours" When we have an adult daughter tag along, we would've been better with the 19' slideout we were looking at. Pity the salesman rubbed the better half up the wrong way.
