Best turbo for ED33T engine?

Hi All. I've got an ed33T to put in my civilian and although the original turbo works it very old and while I have the chance to replace / upgrade before I get the engine put in I am looking for information / suggestions for a good replacement or better yet an upgrade to get the best I can out of this engine. I would think it comes with a stock K03 and there could be options to upgrade to a K04 or something else. Any suggestions , links or info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Mick

I would just replace with the same turbo, like for like. Sometimes trying to get that little more out of a second hand engine leads to disaster.

Hi tuggersbmx,
Ten years ago, I would have said put gas injection on it but now that Diesel-Gas Australia have closed down, you'll have to be satisfied with what you have. The gas injection burnt the diesel more efficiently, giving a bit more power & economy without stressing the engine. I had it on my two 4.2L Patrols - worked well on both but better on the last that was factory turbo-ed.

Spend a little more on your engine & get the injectors checked & retipped if that is possible & necessary so it runs the best it can.

All the best.

Hey tuggersbmx, I would also make sure the engine breaths well too. I always have a snorkle for dust but also for cold air ram. Exhaust needs to be at least two and half inch with a good sraight through muffler. Your old exhaust was non turbo so maybe smaller dia?

Hi Mick smile

Well for a change I have to say I know nothing about selecting a turbo biggrin. But the person here who might give you some ideas is Aus-Kiwi possibly. If he does not reply send him a PM. aww

If you want more power you need to open up the fuel pump and redo the timing also as well as blow more air in. And fit a bigger exhaust too as Stretch said and possibly the intake. You should get the engine checked over and a service, oil and filters and redo the injectors and the tappets etc as Warren said. wink I guess any older diesel I bought or worked on I sent the injectors for cleaning and resetting etc as it saves fuel, makes them start easier and cleaner running.

Good luck Jaahn

Thanks Aus-kiwi. I'm hopeless with turbos. Do you have a link to a td04 that would be suitable? I guess I will need specific. Fitments for manifold / exhaust? I'm not aware of what a civilian needs. Thanks again. Cheers Mick

the only way you will get the correct turbo is get all the info off the engine, google your closest turbo reseller and then get on the phone and talk to the experts. Now I am a worn out old diesel mechanic and spent a lifetime working on the stuff and I am telling you its no good looking on a caravan forum
cheers

On the contrary, there are undoubtedly some members of this forum who are experts in their various fields.Aus-Kiwi is one of these, and seems to be an erudite individual, with good knowledge on a wide range of subjects. One of these areas of expertise may well be turbos....I seem to recall that he has some mechanical experience? Just because someone works at a turbo supplier does not mean he is an expert in that field. No way. Many of these types of people appear knowledgeable simply because they say what people want to hear, having quickly  established that the customer knows nothing and will believe anything.Jaahn is a well-respected member of this forum, and he too has suggested that Aus-Kiwi be asked for advice. At least Aus-Kiwi has made a positive contribution to the thread.Cheers

I agree with the above. With many of my past turbo vehicles I discussed with the "professionals" at turbo retailers and they obviously recommended a original replacement ECT. I also researched and asked questions on an Audi forum and got ten times more valuable information. Ended up getting in contact with a specific member and I ended up buying a turbo that was perfect for what I wanted with more power than what was suggested from the professionals. Aus-Kiwi. I have pm'd you and it would be great to get some more info. Cheers Mick

Hi Aus-Kiwi.

I've sent you a pm.

Hoping you can assist a bit further with K04 options and help me get a better understanding.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mick
