One month only prescriptions for Painkillers

I am an 71 you female. I have chronic pain from osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and take Tramal as a pain medication. We were waiting to leave on our lap till my next 6 month prescription only to be told yesterday that they were no longer available and I could only get a prescription for one month at a time. For independent campers this makes our trip impossible, as trying to get an appointment with a strange doctor in a strange town, without spending some time there is impossible. A tele appointment with our doctor here is possible at the moment but these phone consultations are likely to be stopped in September.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Does anyone know a fix?

We were really looking forward to a 6 month trip but now it looks like its been scuttled by our Federal Government introducing a law that is aimed elsewhere but hits us in pain oldies.

I have a relationship with my Doctor that allows me to call from anywhere and he will send (FAX) a prescription to any Pharmacy in Australia for my extensive pharmacy needs including the restricted ones.
If you have a "regular" Doctor question whether he can do similar for you.

Hi Adder

Welcome to the forum

I agree with Possum, if you explain the situation with your regular doctor, there may be ways and means to overcome the problem

Hope that you have a favourable outcome, and can go travelling

Drugs with these limits will be either S4 or S8. They are restricted by both state and federal law and those restrictions will differ from state to state. It's not uncommon for a script from one state to be useless in another state. Can't recall which, but some are listed as poisons too and come under a poisons register. As suggested, talk to your GP. They might have reliable contacts in other states who can assist you with a local script. Don't bank on a tele consult.

Not positive if this still applies, but for years, you could get a Script for 6 months' worth of Medications at a time, if you were long-time travellers, or lived a loooooong way from a town or city.   Can't remember the  correct term for it, but your GP will know.

Cheers,

Sheba.

We carry a letter from our GP detailing what we are on and why. This has smoothed the waters so to speak, several times. My wife is on some very strong pain medication that without the letter she would not have gotten otherwise. Our GP also gave us a mobile number to be used by any medical professionals who wish to talk to her.

Ensure that your My Health Records are current (Govt Database) www.myhealthrecord.gov.au/ It certainly helps when interstate health issues arise - It can be accessed by Drs, Hospitals and Pharmacists to ascertain your medical history and reliance on certain medications.

We also have a similar situation as you Possum.

But!!! My Dr. said that the Gov. is coming down heavy on Dr who over supply.

I take 2 panadeineforte daily, that is 60 tablets a month.

Last visit to my Dr. he was only able to give me a script for 20, with no repeat.

F*&*#ing Gov. One day the guy who made this decision may also end up with huge arthritis pain. Then what.

Some medicines have been restricted to a month's supply to ensure everyone can get what they need during covid 19 as a lot of our meds are made overseas, as everyone is finding out this happens with a lot of other items as well.

JayDee panadeine forte main ingredient is Codeine which gets converted/metabolised by the liver which turns it into morphine which is more then likely why they are restricting yours.

Have approached a cannabis supply chemist, in the Gold Coast. Am approved to get the THC variety, as a pain reliever, post to anywhere in Australia, paid for by DVA. Was on P.forte, for a long time for my osteo, now on gunga. They don't trust us with codiene, but trust us with dope. - MADDENING.
