Brief Intro from Grant

Greetings from an "old" new member.

I have joined the Forum to be able to share and gain information relating to caravaning in Australia. I have been living in Perth since 2005 with a brief sojurn away to South Africa. I love the outdoors and camping and spent many wonderful holidays camping with the family.  My daughters are now older and my wife and I are in a different phase of our lives and will, in the near future, be buying a caravan and tow vehicle to suit out travel needs.

We are not in the fortunate group of having unlimired funds, so need to look at what we need and can afford rather than what we want or would like! Once we work out the caravan (need two person, double bed with en-suite), we will match it with a suitable tow vehicle. Both will be second hand.

I really see the wealth of experience in a group like this being invaluable in offering thoughts, ideas and experiences to help guide us in the right direction with our adventure. I want to buy once and then set that up to suit our particular needs. There are wonderful vans out there, but at the same time you read many horror stories so finding the right one with decent quality is important to us.

I therefore apologise in advance for any duplicated questions - I will do my best not to ask anything without searching first for past threads! I look forward to the journey with new friends.

Welcome to the gang Grant and Mrs Grant, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Just make sure you ask your questions in the appropriate section/s. That way they can be found easily when things are down in the dungeon.

Keep Safe out there.

A warm welcome from me also, Grant (netorius)

I actually enjoyed looking for a caravan, to suit my then needs

Each caravan I looked at, I told them, that I did not actually know what I wanted, so I will look at plenty more, before I make up my mind

People seemed to accept the fact, that I was not a tyre kicker, or trying to drop a price

I do not believe that anyone, unless they have unlimited funds, will find exactly what they want

I can only tell you of my own experience

I eventually picked an el cheapo caravan, which was small enough to be towed by my current car, which was a 6 cylinder Ford Falcon

The method behind the (at that point of time) madness, was that if I did not like caravanning, I would walk away and still be able to laugh at myself

I done the lap solo, in that old caravan, and became adapted to it

I purchased the motorhome I now have, as the wife wanted a RV which would allow the cat to walk up to the cab, while I was driving

Thanks for the welcome.  I know pretty much what we want and being reasonably handy, happy to take on some DIY type renovation work, although I do not want to rebuild anything, so possibly just opt for a mid 2000-ish van that meets our needs and add the personal comforts.

I find it quite frustrating when I look at something like the new Crusader XCountry Extreme!  I dare not even ask the price, but that would suit our needs perfectly. but I am also a realist!

So no desperate rush, and many vans to look at before we finalise this.  Feeling excited...
