I just purchased a Honda 2200 I generator. I was surprised that the sales man , he also services them, told me not to use the Eco mode ,as it carbons up the valves , we have a lot come back with problems over using Eco mode to much
Has anyone here had problems of this . I mean what is the point of eco if using it causes problems?
Regards Orid

It is probably as a result Australia's fuel quality compared to other countries.... although I have not experienced any probs. with our Honda 20 IS and 30 IS gen sets.
We have a Honda 1Kva, it is about 7 years old and used often as we have a lot of current draw with a 46l freezer plus 110l fridge plus varying times when we charge devices, it has always been used on Eco mode when charging except for charging the tug battery. As to this date it has been extremely reliable. Oh and I service it after every long trip.
I have used our Eu1000 for the past 18 years both work and play. Change the 200ml of oil every 50 hours of run time. It too runs in eco mode 90% of the time. Has never let us down, while we had our camper trailer for 12 odd years.
Then came along the van with solar and AC unit. It needed a Eu2000 to run it. The accountant said its time to get yourself a new unit for your work, as this can be just written off in same year.
So I did.
I still preferr the 1000 as we don't used the the AC that much. Its smaller, lighter, and runs 8-8.5 hours on a tank. Keeps the house battery topped up when needed, while free camping for a week or more.
The problem with eco mode is that it runs the engine at a low speed and, relatively, low temperature - this is fine providing, from time to time, you give the engine some serious work to do.
Ideally once every, say, 10 hours of eco mode switch to normal mode for one hour and allow the engine to run at full speed and, better, still connect a 1kW (50% of gen capacity) load this will help to burn off carbon deposits and eliminate the risk of bore glazing.
I currently own a Honda EU20i but it will be the last Honda generator I ever buy. About 1200 hours and it's stuffed. I'll try the Yamaha EF2800i next.

AT such a price I donated our Honda Eu20i back to Haughton Honda for Mech Spares as the Invertor board had spat the dummy. They wanted some $1500 to repair / replace such. Bought a $400 Kings 3.5 kwh jobby and so far it is working well, but a bit noisier of course AND heavier as well.
The reasoning was as quoted elsewhere I read, even if it fails in 2 years it will be some 8 - 10 years before I am out of pocket in comparison.

Also the older I get the more I realise I do not know.
