What is your friend trying to do, live off the land? build simple shelters or forage? The aboriginals did it for 10's of thousands of years, us immigrants wouldn't last very long.
If your friend is travelling around and is just after tips on doin' different stuff then Busher Tucker Man & Jack Absalom TV series are both on YouTube.
I liked Jack a little gruff but his paintings were superb and his advice life saving.
