murky water in older caravan

The water coming from our cold water tap is murky/milky.  We thought it was air bubbles but it doesn't clear after sitting (I filled a glass).  We've done this several times.  Tried running the water for ages - still the same problem.  Emptied the water tank completely X 3 - filled it, and water still the same.  Tried this at home and then emptied and refilled at  2 caravan parks.  Question  - is the water tank too old and needs replacing, and/or do the pipes need replacing, or is there a solution that we haven't though of.   Its a 2001 Roma caravan.

Welcome to GN's impyim, If it were my van I would give the whole plumbing system a good dose of Chlorine bleach for a couple of times - when all is running clear. empty tanks and refill with clean water, a cup of lime cordial put into tanks will remove residual chlorine bleach taste.

As far as I can work out its a metal tank - I can't get under the van (too old) but I tapped it with a long piece of metal and it sounds metallic.

Its got a metal plate underneath to protect it - didn't tap that.  I think its just a grey colour but a bit hard to tell as we go on dirt roads a lot.

Welcome to the gang Irene, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I agree with Possum, use the bleach.

That said, if are are a little concerned about bleach, chuck a full bottle of Milton baby bottle cleaner in the fill tank and drive around. Empty and do again no additive drive then drain.

Milton is basically weaker bleach, sort off. Safe for babies safe for you.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Still havent tried the bleach - been unwell. Will try it though - will try Milton first & see how that goes. If not try something stronger. Will get back to this thread in a few days when Ive tried it.

If its alloy ? It could be electronisis ? I wouldnt drink the water ! Seems you have a corrosion issue ? I would fit a bladder inside tank if alloy ? Or simply replace with good poly type approved fresh water tank . Aluminium leads to brain issues !! Like we need that !

Milton is simply sodium hypochlorite at 1% - own brand bleaches (the cheapest) are normally sodium hypochlorite at 4% - so a mix of 3 parts water to 1 part bleach = Milton.

To produce potable water the WHO recommend 1 part of 1% sodium hypochlorite to 2000 parts of water, so for a 100L water tank add 50mL of 1% sodium hypochlorite - for cleaning purposes I would increase that to 150mL of 1% but not more otherwise the taste may take a age to go.
