ProStar-30 controller

Solar question. I have a ProStar-30 solar charge controller. i have a 120w solar panel and 2x120ah batteries. usually with the solar they sit at 13.2 v when not using the van. last week i connected a 200w blanket to the batteries direct using the blankets controller. when the i did the volts read out went to 15v and after a minute or so i removed the blanket. this morning the volt reading was on 12.8v, yesterday was about 12.9v, and the red light on the ProStar-30 was flashing indicating low charge. anyone got any ideas on what is causing this. was plugging in the blanket the wrong thing to do.

Depending on a few things 120W of solar probably not enough to charge 240Ah of battery - but maybe you're just using them for float?

Most AGM (are they AGM?) batteries specify a maximum charge voltage of around 14V7 but 15V0 for a while won't kill them although I wouldn't let mine sit at that voltage for more than, say, 30 minutes.

Solar controllers/chargers often have the facility to set bulk and float charge voltages, maybe your's needs setting up.

The blanket should be fine, it won't damage the batteries providing it doesn't apply a high voltage to them for an extended time.

RTFM?
