My mate decided to do a full service of his brakes. He decided to purchase complete backing plates including shoes and magnet. After fitting all 4 wheels he hooked up the Tug to test.
Magnets worked but not a full grab.
After an afternoon of trying every possibility, including measuring both the old and new, he put the old one back on and they worked as they should.
New shoes take time to fit to radius of drum. They are not radius ground at manufacture and therefore will not be perfect fit to drum. They need to wear to shape to get full contact.
The backing plate assemblies were replaced on my van. Several outfits attempted and could not get full braking on the van. The last bloke remarked that the assemblies used were Dexter units. The original components were Al-Ko (axle, brake and drums.) In desperation, I insisted that the assemblies be replaced with Al-Ko units. They were and I now have full braking on the van without the controller being set at full gain.
Are you suffering from a similar problem? Check what your axle and drums are. Did they use a different manufacturer's backing plates?

Yes different backing plates. He put the old Alko ones back on and they work fine. He got them off the good old E something, so he has everything crossed for a return and refund. - thats for the 4 plates. Thank you for your input.
A mate bought 2 brake drums off flea bay. The brakes on one side worked fine, the other side nothing. When checking the non working side found the drum to not be magnetic.... Off he went & bought an alko drum. All good.
Ended up costing him more than buying 2 alko drums to start with.
