Towing with the new 2020/21 Mazda BT50

HI, I'm a new member to this group, I recently sold my 2014 Mazda BT50 which I found to be a great tow vehicle over the years I had it. My van is a 2019 Jayco Journey 19'.

I have purchase a new 2020 Mazda BT50 (Isuzu in disguise) with auto transmission  and recently hitched up the van for a short trip (60km) to a local van park in NQ. On a straight section of highway no wind at 95kph I found that the transmission wanted to hold in 4th gear, when I moved to sports mode and changed up to 5th gear it would move back to 4th with considerable revs from the motor, this is chalk and cheese if I compare to my old car.

Is this the "norm" for people that tow with new Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT50 and do I just have to get used to the way this car handles.

When I drive around town in a 60 zone if I creep over the limit by a couple of km it does the opposite and moves into 5th gear and you can feel the motor labour as the gear is to high for that speed, spoke to the Mazda service manager who said the gearbox couldn't be adjusted (have to stick strictly to the 60 speed limit)

Like to hear comments from others that tow with same make vehicles.

Welcome to the gang Nuske, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I have heard the new Dmax has a couple of towing issues so maybe the same with you BT50. It's probably a case of getting used to the way your vehicle handles towing.

My Collie towed great but since I had some maintenance work done it tows differently so I now drive accordingly.

Keep safe on the roads and out there.

 Hi Nuske

With your Mux changing gear in sports mode this is a software update which is factory set to stop your auto transmission from overheating. The gears will automatically change in sports mode but will not change up gears. Forth gear is recommended for towing medium to heavy caravans to stop overworking the transmission and much better with fuel economy

Cheers

Isuzu were probably sick of telling owners to use sports mode while towing and made the system smarter to nullify driver error.
