I am about to retire and myself and my husband are considering buying a caravan so are looking into as many associated costs as we can think of. We would value your advice re how much we are likely to have to pay to store a van when we are at home. We will probably do 2x3 month trips per year.

Welcome to GN's Yorkiegirl, I guess you are up Ipswich way so is that where you need to store a caravan - Storage spaces under cover are normally pretty expensive for long term - It will necessitate an extensive search on Gooogle or such to get one near to you.
If you consider a pop-top van that could fit in an ordinary garage/carport you would most probably have better luck.
