isuzu mu-x wheel / tyre size


Hi.

Iam considering the 2020 MU-x as my next Tug, and noticed that they come standard with 20" rims, and presumably lower profile tyres.

I am hoping that members may have the newer models, and might comment on this aspect of the vehicle.

Finally I note that there is some sort of steering ? assist which must / needs to be "de-activated" every time you start up when towing. Any comments on this also, as I have not experienced it before.

Base model LSM has 17" rims and AT tyres, next model LSU has 18" and HT, top model LST is 20" with HT. I'd be surprised if it wasn't negotiable given lots of buyers on lower spec want part of the higher spec. Isuzu are pushing the towing aspects so it might be a common query. The driver/steer assist might incorporate rear facing cameras and sense what's being towed. As long as it doesn't reset whenever you turn the vehicle on again it wouldn't worry me. We have one vehicle with front sensors that's distracting in traffic so they're permanently off.

Whilst the MUX is a great vehicle that a mate used to tow a 2800kg ATM van on the "Big lap",and we do not know what size your van is,I think you should know that there is no way known that it can safely tow anything more than about 2800kg ATM as a PIG trailer.(van). Happy to explain,but low rear axle carrying capacity is one reason for this.For example,a 280kg towball weight puts over 400kg onto that rear axle.IF you were silly enough to try to tow a 3500kg van,with the generally accepted 10% towball weight,the EXTRA weight applied to the rear axle is over 500kg.Short wheelbase and low GVM are other reasons to be wary.Perhaps you plan to tow a caravan that weighs under 2800kg,in which case the MUX is an excellent car, plenty of power and good fuel economy,according to my mate! Don't know about the wheels,but I certainly wouldn't be running 20 and low profile tyres.Good luck with your research.Cheers

20" low profile tyres are totally unsuitable for off bitumen.
If that is part of the plan, get the smallest diameter rim you can get and fit the highest profile LT tyre that you can.

When we bought our 2019 D-max, I asked for it to be fitted with 16" wheels off the LSM model. I have since found that 17" tyres are as popular as the 16s in isolated places like Birdsville.

Now the minimum sized wheel is 17", you have every right to ask your new car to be fitted with the 17"wheels. Bear in mind the speedo might be out so you'll have to do what I do & drive with "Bert" telling me "You are over the speed limit." I know I'm on the limit when the speed limit indicator on the sat nav flashes red. "Bert" chips in at 1kph over the limit.

I'm about to change my tyres & hopefully that will correct the speedo.

I suggest you join the OzIsuzu Forum - like this one there are some "clued up" people there.
