Suburban Water Heaters

Had a note today, that was sent out by ACT Govt about recall of certain models of the above heaters.  Please check ACCC web the check actions required.

This is an old issue:

"Published date 15 Nov 2019"

Can anyone with an affected heater comment upon what, if anything, has happened over the two years since the recall was issued?

I have one of the involved models but mine is, fortunately, outside the recall serial number range.

Had one of the units in our van.

Not the original unit fitted, but one fitted in Cairns to replace it in July 2019.

Was a bit of a long winded process during 2020 to finally get agreement between ACCC, Suburban distributor and others as to what would happen, but process was this.

Register with distributor to go onto notification list for testing. This started in late 2019 after recall announced. Unit was not to be used at this time on gas. We did use ours intermittently, by heating water when needed and then turning off unit. If we hadnt done this, we would have been without our HWS in van for 12 months from registration to replacement.

Units then tested by approved contractors/repairers. If faulty, go onto list for replacement, if passed test, have complimentary CO monitor installed in van. This started to happen in August/September 2020 I think it was.

Ours failed, and new updated unit provided 2 weeks after test and installed free of charge in October last year. I subsequently fitted my own CO monitor to settle Kathys mind about these units.

There were just over 17000 units registered for testing, and I am uncertain how many tests have been done, how many units have proved safe and how many have been replaced, at this time. I understand supply of units has been limiting factor, as the units are a popular fit to many new vans, including Australias major manufacturer Jayco, who I understand also own distribution company.

I am pleased with outcome after a very drawn out start for the first 12 months following initial recall.

I hardly think Govt. would go to the trouble of issuing warnings about these heaters if it wasn't still a threat. They sent this warning to all registered RV's owners in the ACT.
The ACCC also do not seem to be satisfied with the response as it is one of the items at the top of their list on their website.
Anyway does not matter to me, I don't have a gas water heater.

It is still a threat Oz wide. I have not heard the figures of late but the last ones I saw indicated they have only accounted for 50% or so of those released on the market in Oz.

Thanks for that TheHeaths.

Yet another good reason why every caravan *should* have a CO alarm.

CO alarm $29

Bunnings do a similar one
