If you dont need power look at Lake Wallace just west of Lithgow. The road in is a little muddy, with pit holes, but otherwise ok.

Welcome to GN's Phil, I agree Lake Wallace at Wallerawang is a great place to spend a day or two, it can be beautiful with a great range of birdlife - it can also be a bloody cold place if the wind is blowing across the lake.

Yes, Lake Wallace is a great place for a stop over.  Heaps of room and though the road in is dirt, it is all weather and flat.  We normally stay there as our first night when we leave Sydney for the West as we get away by lunch and it is an easy drive over the mountains to this location.
