BREAK SAFE Series 5000

I have the above Break Safe system [Series 5000] fitted to my caravan. The battery needs replacing. My problem is how to remove the face off the box so I can access the battery. It seems a couple of clips need to be "unclipped" to remove the face, but I cannot see any clips. Would some kind person please help me with advice on what these clips look like and where they are located.

I would take a photo for you but not back home till Sunday lunchtime.  See the attached image the clips ether side are the rectangular sections.  Feel towards the back on each side and press in but at the same time pull the front section forward which s hinged at the bottom.

Welcome to GN's Lynton,

As TimTim advised the cover is a snap fit - usually the location where mounted does little to assist removal.

Thanks TimTim and Possum 3. My Break Safe is Series 5000 and is different from the one you had a photo of TimTim. Is yours a Series 6000? I really appreciated your quick advice, though.

Hi LyntonB, welcome!

I have the 5000 series.

There are no clips, you need to unscrew the box from where it is fixed.

There may be 4 or 6 screws holding the box in position.

Once off, the housing and the cover come apart.

If you have solar then connect the 5000 to the house batteries to permanently trickle charge and that will keep the break-away battery fully charged.

To test the system, pull the drawbar connecting cable away from the break-away switch. The vans brake lights should illuminate indicating the brakes have been activated.

Hope this helps.

Hi Richard. Many, many thanks for your comprehensive advice. Great idea re connection of the 5000 to the house batteries. Would that be by using the red and black terminals on the outside of the box, or using some other connection?
Thanks again.

I ran a separate twin flex to the fuse panel from the Red/Black trickle charge terminals.

The 5000 has a built in trickle charge circuit so battery will always be fully charged.

I test the Brakesafe system before each trip. No probs for 3 years now.

Hi everyone, some may disagree with what I have done concerning buying a new brakesafe battery, I purchased 12v 7ah from security section at Bunnings for $28 then ground the terminals to correct size. No problems with the brakesafe system in the 9months since battery install, just rv & caravan shops price gouging caravan owners again I think!

It would be easier to go a battery shop and buy a replacement battery that doesn't have to be modified to fit.
