I wish to fit Truma Avanta rooftop aircon to a Coronet FS3-5950 poptop. Anyone done this or know someone who could do it.vat present have underbunk model that is in effective in Qld weather. Truma weighs 33kg.

The only problem with fitting A/C to a pop-top is that 33kg will feel like 100kg when putting top up. You may be young and fit now but when arthritis catches you up will it become a task.

I would consider how many times you use your current under-bunk one and decide whether it is worth the effort 1 and creating a potential to leak 2.

We use 10L fuel containers (9kg with petrol) on the roof of the car as any heavier is a pain, like getting our second spare wheel on or off the roof. 30kg is not fun, an acrobatic act & an accident waiting to happen, & it's getting harder at time goes by.

Even our portable solar panels is a bit awkward at 15kg.

Aus-Kiwi.  You are on the money, if it is at all possible of fitting a domestic home spit system a/c.

Raising of the caravan pop top would be very unforgiving with the weight of the a/c added to the top.

Our Heron a/C in our poptop,  under the seat A/C worked well enough for the small amount of use it got annually but we are all different with the use there.

I have heard of others doing the same with similar type of air conditioners.

But as part of the fitment the gas struts must be upgraded to a higher rated loading. Only an expert can work out what the higher rating should be.

Without upgrading the struts, as Possum 3, says the roof will feel like 100kgs.

As Graham suggests, split system is the way to go. Have Mitsubishi HEAVY INDUSTRIES 2.5kw system mounted on drawbar to cool 6 metre van. Works brilliantly off my solar-powered batteries. Was $700 at Good Guys. Cheers

Interesting that you often recommend Mitsubishi HEAVY INDUSTRIES A/Cs.

When we had a A/C specialist in to quote on replacing our ageing house A/C he was very vocal in recommending Mitsubishi Electrics over Mitsubishi Heavy Industries products.  He said that the product support including technical advice & spares was far superior with the former.  Also the A/C part of Heavy Industries was very much a poor relation in its corporate structure & got nowhere near the management attention that the other source received from within Mitsu Electrics.

We ended up with Fujitsu from him, which has been excellent.

Our van A/C has rarely been used over the last 23 years but still works in a fashion. Bloody noisy too & can't be re-gassed without complete 'draining'.  If we were to replace it, I would look at a split system but the hole in the roof from the current system would be an issue.

I too would worry about the weight issue with a roof mounted system on a pop top.

We were told similar by a aircon repair bloke.

Hi Greg,
Please excuse the later reply but our Heron works very well & we live in Townsville, travel to Cairns often.
You say your unit is ineffective in Qld weather - have you conducted the regular maintenance on the under bed/under seat main unit, cleaned the filters on the outlet unit? See the handbook for details.

As the others said unless you were Hercules, you would have trouble lifting the roof with 30+kg on the roof. I've had my gas struts regassed but to add a weight that the roof was not designed to carry would add extra stress on the mounting pins, screws.

Consider have a "fridgey" tradesman look at your existing system before you consider adding your proposed unit.
