Hi Merv. Friend is one of best diesel tuners in Australia, with branches in several states, and he always advises owners of BT50 and Ranger not to play with the engine, as it already is highly stressed. He turns away business because he is ethical. Not interested in trying to justify my comment as I am simply passing-on his advice. He did my car and got outstanding results because the old Toyota V8 is a very understressed engine, which is why they go forever. Good luck. Cheers

Hi BARME1.

I own a 2016 BT50 3.2 Auto and tow a van of about 2300kg. Ute has a bull bar and a canopy.

It can slow down marginally on long steep hills (maybe to 80kmh) but usually holds 4th gear. On an average gradient hill it may shift from 5th to 4th, but does it easily and is still not over revving. I have no reason to think about needing more power. I am not a mechanics rear end but my feeling is that increased power means more fuel means more cost. Give it more power and you will find yourself using it, whether you need to or not.

Unless you will be towing the "Queen Mary", the BT50 in it's standard form should be satisfactory. After all, the transmission does have 6 speeds for a reason.

When I am towing I am not in a hurry. Others may have a different opinion.

Robert.

Had my D-Max remapped two years ago and very happy. While having the job done I asked the tuner did he do all vehicles. His reply was he refused to do Rangers or Mazda's as some of the vehicles he had done in the past experienced transmission and motor problems.

My brother had his Toyota 70 series done at the same time and was advised to fit a heavy duty clutch which he did . His mate having his done at the same time declined. Burnt his clutch out some two months later.

I asked if I should consider upgrading my clutch in the D-Max and he told me that he hadn't had any problems in the past. 18 months later I had to replace the clutch. As the D-Max has only 120,000ks I figure the remap was the cause.

Was the remap worth it? Yep!

Thanks for reporting back Merv, as it always is good to hear of posters' decisions. And congratulations on leaving it as it is. The BT50 is capable of safely towing up to about a 3100kg ATM van. Cheers.

Personally for your tow tug I wouldn't chip it. There are only a couple of ways to produce more hp from an internal combustion engine and in simple terms they are as follows. 1. Increase the displacement. 2.increase the compression ratio. 3.if it is supercharged/turbocharged increase boost. 4. All the above require pouring more fuel into it. Chipping usually involves 3 and 4. The disadvantages of these are. 1. The practicalities of increasing displacement of an existing motor. 2 and 3. Increasing cylinder pressures and therefore stress on the engine. 4. Fuel economy can go south rapidly. If you are building a race engine then all of the above doesn't matter a damn and the more power you can extract without it becoming a hand grenade the better. For a vehicle for towing, if you need more power buy a bigger truck with more power to start with. Engines are already working reasonably hard towing anyway. Adding additional stress is not always wise in terms of longevity.

Leave it as is, don't stress the engine any more than necessary. If you slow down on hills, what is the problem, that is what the transmission is for.

Happy stress free travelling.

Hmmmm, who do you trust?

The US$4.75 B manufacturer of your vehicle that spent years developing it, or some back yard little Aussie company flogging worthless Chinese made mod chips that just mess with throttle response rates.

Not a single brand on the market will honour their warranty if you install a mod chip.

Say no more.

Most tunes are custom done in real time . Fitting a generic chip is not tuning . Depends what and how the manufacturer set up tune in the first place . No point adding more boost Id the compressor , turbo is already at its peak ! Or youll be just pumping hot air . Maybe better exhaust ? Bigger more efficient intercooler . Theres a reason semis can do million miles . Less stress . Just ease back on the hills !! Another ? Check what diameter tyres we fit . Its good and fine to fit high profile for comfort, grip etc but it plays havoc with final drive ratios. A little rpm on light throttle is more efficient than lower rpm and plenty of throttle. Heat builds up too !!

I was considering getting a re map for my wildtrak but decided against it. My previous van was 3.1 T loaded and towed it quite satisfactory.

New van about 2.8 T, getting it weighed next trip. However, I was advised by a few people the have an oil cooler installed. Yet to do.

Dick.

Hi Graeme. What you've written is absolutely correct, and confirmed by the results of my testing while I travel. My car and van weigh 6800kg and the car tows best in 4th gear, as well as getting around 10% better fuel economy than it does when I use 5th gear. Although it has plenty of power, and has maximum torque from 1200rpm to 3200rpm, it gets better fuel economy in 4th gear because the engine is running more efficiently. Cheers

Just sold my 2017 bt50 on the weekend, never felt the need for any kind of remap, it powered extremely well compared to my remapped Dmax. Don't be afraid to put your foot down and hold that gear a bit longer.
