Welcome, You've come to the right place for discussions EWIA.

Being a bit of an "Vanilla Slice Aficionado" myself - tell me where in your opinion is the best vanilla slice to be purchased and your best vanilla slice recipe?

That should start a discussion amongst the members.

Well Possum3 as for Vanilla Slice recipes I confess to be severely incapable. I can almost make a cup of tea but that is about it.

Now as to the whereabouts of the most esteemed Vanilla Slice maker in Australia, I am also wanting there as well. Not that I have not tasted wide and far. It is a bit like your first kiss, very enjoyable, but I cannot remember the girl's name. Shame on me I know.

So in my view tis not a question of the best maker of Vanilla Slices, rather we need to ask ourselves is there such a thing as a sub standard Vanilla Slice? Hence the kiss analogy!

I disagree; There are definitely sub-standard vanilla slices (and custard tarts) slimy, yellow, gelatinous, puss encased in inedible pastry like leather.

Also kissing, many much more memorable than others - but I think that's a subject left well alone.

I'll start; the best Bakery produced vanilla slice comes from a small family bakery in Moorebank NSW - "Lisles" in Moorebank Village shops.

Well Possum3 for all we know the bakery"Lisles", in Moorebank NSW, might be run by your Aunty Flo and Uncle Fred? Promotional bias is everywhere. And furthermore you are subsuming that tastebuds are of equal distribution twixt grey nomaders, when nothing could be further from the truth. And as for, "slimy, yellow, gelatinous, puss encased in inedible pastry like leather" presentations, I suspect you went to a GPS school to be so judgemental.

Sorry no affiliation with Lisles, and certainly no GPS schooling (far from it).

It is strange how many "Nomads" check out the local bakery when going to a new town/village. The child-bride always insists that we find "coffee" whereas I like the bakery - the one in Gunning last week certainly would be a top contender on the "great list", not for vanilla slice but for their magnificent cherry-ripe slice when one bite is enough to experience wonderment, to eat the whole thing would be a task for a mere glutton, but I managed. The child-bride liked the coffee as well.

Well it does take a certain type of nomad who's first port of call in a new town is the local bakery. I suspect I am in agreement with the child-bride that a good coffee is the main priority. Gluttony as we know is one of the seven deadly sins, so it might be off to confession for you Possum3 and I suspect on a regular basis.

And what happened to the best vanilla slice discussion? No takers?

Well Plain Truth impressive but your evidence is somewhat lacking once we look under the bonnet. For starters Bridgewater Bakery is hardly a quaint little town bakery that Possum3 was alluding to. With branches in Bridgewater, Bendigo and Kangaroo Flat (wherever that is LOL) it is a bloody national franchise. And Wotif is hardly a reputable research source now is it? And the Bridgewater Bakery is having none other than Mr Tim Ferguson speak at a function there on Australia Day. Now I ask you "Tim Ferguson"? Wasn't he one of the Doug Anthony All Stars from the Big Gig? No Plain Truth good try, but hardly credible. Then there is the Victorian issue and well ............

Poppy**** Plain Truth. You seem to be all over the place in bringing up these bogus prestigious Vanilla Slice Titles! Whereabouts are the multitudes on here giving testimony to your outrageous claims? Not one Plain Truth, but then again you Mexicans are pretty good at gilding the Lilly.

Screenshot 2023-01-15 at 9.03.07 pm.pngThanks Ivan. Well of course a lady friend is bound to make an exquisite Vanilla Slice. What else would you expect? I hope the quality continues for many years to come. But we are discussing small rustic bakeries so back on topic.

But Plain Truth whilst your internet research is commendable, you need to be made aware that us New South Welshmen do not give up our cherished secrets willingly.

I consider myself a connoisseur of Vanilla Slices and I recommend Dirranbandi Bakery in Queensland near St. George. It is on my bucket list to return to, hopefully this year after flood, fires and covid have subsided. On our first and only visit to Dirranbandi in 2018 we bought one to have with coffee and they were so good we bought a heap to take away and enjoyed them the rest of the week. I just hope the bakery is still there and the vanilla slices are still as magnificent.

It was still there in Feb 2022 - I think the main reason they are good is the fact that there is nothing else. Like the Hamburgers at Goodooga (at the Post Office not the new General store). To get something great in these small towns/villages, just blows the mind.
