We are 2 elderly ladies from South Africa. We want to travel from Sydney to Cairns and have 2 months to do it in.
We would like to explore Sydney before we take the long road to Cairns. Could somebody recommend a good camping site in or near Sydney from where to explore the city.
Any advice on good campsites and things not to be missed is also very welcome.
I'm from South Australia so can't recommend camp sites in Sydney area but I think they might be pretty expensive.
I suggest you purchase the low cost Australian version of the wikicamps app as it will be of good use as you travel up the coast as well.
I have been to Sydney twice and seen the sights.
I personally would stay in one of the Youth Hostels Australia (YHA) Hostels while in Sydney the one at The Rocks (which is a little more expensive) is in walking distance to ferry's, trains and buses and the Opera house. My husband and I spent some time at The Rocks and found it very convenient to visit the Opera house and The Harbour Bridge on foot, Bondi Beach via the bus, Manley Beach via ferry, plus we then drove the hire car to Katoomba YHA to see the blue mountains which is another not to be missed destination. Also from the balcony of The Rocks YHA you could see the Opera house and the bridge and it was stunning especially at night.
Whilst you were enjoying the above you could plan your camping adventure up the coast
As Wannabee said, get the Wikicamps app ... available for Android, Apple and Windows. You pay a once only licence fee of $7.99 for each platform you want and then can install on unlimited devices linked to that account.
Camping around Sydney is not easy with none close to the city. The NRMA caravan park at Narabeen on Sydney's northern beaches is often mentioned. Although it's promoted as kid friendly, it's close to surfing beaches and you can catch a bus to the city from nearby. Or better for tourists ... catch the bus to Manly and then to the city by ferry.
I am guessing you are not in Australia yet. When you say camping, do you mean with tents and equipment that you will buy or bring? Do you want facilities or freedom camp for the space and nature benefits? Most caravan parks allow tents, but not all. What sort of vehicle? If your budget extends to hiring a motorhome, they are used a lot in Australia. But 2 months will not be cheap.
Some time ago, I had been researching some van parks in Sydney and found a couple that I thought had potential. Weather conditions impacted our trip planning so I did not follow through with either of them. We have a caravan. I will leave you to do your further research. Some parks have cabins.
The parks that I found were: . Sheralee Tourist Park in the suburb of Rockdale . DIscovery Parks in the suburb of Lane Cove.

I note you have not mentioned your mode of travelling Australia. Are you renting a car, campervan, motorhome or car caravan combination alternatively catching bus, train, taxi cabs? The Sydney metropolitan region is immense and has no camping areas within 20/30 klms of city centre.
As a visitor It would be prudent to book hotel/motel accommodations at Sydney and travel around town in Buses or Uber.

As I live on the West coast, I can not comment on the East coast travell
As others have already said, if you download Wikicamps Australia on your phone/tablet/laptop, it gives all the caravan parks as well as free/donation/low cost camping sites
This app is less than $10 Australian, and it is a once off payment
