I have a gas heater in my aluminium tent but have heard people put a little kerosene in the tank with the diesel to help keep all the innards clean. Maybe drain all the diesel and clean out with kero then give a good rinse with fresh diesel. Someone else might come along to agree or disagree and maybe have some ratios for you.

Hope you get it sorted.

Sounds like you should replace the Tank as it could be  deteriorating on the inside or else some contaminant has been put in the Tank at some stage. When you have sorted the problem it is best to keep the Tank Full or near Full when not in use .....helps prevent condensation forming and contaminating the diesel - also a little Kerosene in the Diesel will prevent "Summer Diesel" gelling (and causing blockages)  in colder weather....

G'day Bowser,

Black in diesel tanks is algae - algae requires water and light to form and grow.

Small diesel tanks are inexpensive, so it may be advisable to replace tank to be certain all algae is removed - even small specks can foul fuel lines and heaters.

Water is common in "old" fuel, don't use old stored diesel that is doubtful to put in tug, "so I'll put it in the heater tank rather than throw it away" is poor economy.

Most modern caravan heater tanks are translucent plastic, which allows light to penetrate, paint the tank with heavy black paint.
