Caravan mattress

Hello, seeking some advice on mattresses. We have a list of extras to choose for our van amongst them is a mattress topper or a premium latex mattress. Any suggestions? And would you purchase through van maker or buy elsewhere?

We had a high quality foam mattress in our bus, with an Ikea topper on it, & anti condensation mesh underneath. We travelled right around the country with it & it wasn't bad at all.

Since then we had a rooftop tent to which we fitted a ReCreation pocket spring mattress which was wonderful. It was sold with the RTT, and we bought another 'Plush' model ReCreation pocket Spring mattress for our Van, and also one for our bed at home. They can be purchased as 'single sided' if required to keep height of the mattress lower & to minimise weight. That's what we had in our RTT.

You can see we are quite sold on them. My wife has bursitis in her hips, & finds the plush model to be good. These mattresses fold up as easily as a foam mattress in one direction which is a huge bonus when getting them in or out of the van. They are also cooler than foam when in hot weather.

They are made to custom size in Melbourne, & cost was pretty much the same as a top quality foam mattress+topper+undermesh. One of them we had sent to a local transport depot & collected it from there. If you are not in Vic I expect there will be other manufacturers who make similar products.

Horses for courses re Latex mattreses (or toppers). Some folk like them a lot, but I wouldn't choose one. Latex is heavy & expensive - adding unnecessary weight to a van as well as being hard work to lift in/out if needed as well as lightening your wallet.  Also too hot & sweaty for my liking in the northern climate IMHO.

Oh, and no matter where I was buying a mattress from, I would no more consider buying one without laying on it for a while than I would buy a car without driving it first.

We have innersping full-sized single beds, we have sheepskin mattress protectors that afford a good night sleep - cool in summer, warm in winter.

My eyebrows auto raised when I read "Latex".   Our home king bed has a latex mattress & is as heavy as.  Surely not suitable for a van I would have thought.

After many years use our latex mattress is developing a slight ridge in the middle.  It can't be inverted because of a fixed lambs wool topper.  (on second thoughts, it may be the topper that has the ridge).

We have used a custom innerspring in the van for 20yrs or so, with quality mattress protectors with foam egg crate topper & just sheets & covered doona. I carry a spare silk doona, just in case we strike unexpected cold weather.

Have you tried the NASA pillow covers from Aldi?  They are cool.  I run hot from "horrible disease" and they stop me from sweating like a stuck pig.  They regularly have them on the "special buys", but I think you can also get the same stuff in mattress protectors and pillow protectors at the department stores.  Aldi calls it Outlast.  It's something to do with NASA.

As for latex, they must have different types (or they used to).  I used to have a latex mattress and base (Dunlopillo) and the mattress was very light, I could flip it (queen size) by myself.

Ye, you must be right about different types of Latex mattresses.

Our Queen size one is a very difficult lift for one person.

I was flat out lifting it onto its edge & holding it against the wall while the base was rotated & put into place. I used to have to lift it to enable a 180 degree rotation every month.

Finally resolved that by putting on two valances (valances cover both sides & one end only) & just rotating the wheeled base & mattress.  No lifting required.
