At Norseman go South to Esperance. West to Ravensthorpe then North to Lake King then Hyden (Wave Rock) be prepared to be ripped off, and there is NO free camping around there. There is a rough dirt road from Dundas , just South of Norseman, to Lake King, but NOT recommended! From Wave Rock you can go North to Merridin, which has a great museum. Then West to Perth, then North if you wish. There are many options. Good luck. Cheers

Consider going to Narembeen about 100klms NW of Wave Rock (Hyden), for free camp.

As an RV (Recreation Vehicle) Friendly Town, Narembeen proudly provides amenities and services for self-drive travellers including parking, access to potable water and a free dump point.

Free 72 hour parking is available for fully self-contained RVs at the Caravan Park located on Currall Street.

Accommodation must be booked by calling the Shire of Narembeen T: (08) 9064 7308 during office hours only. After hours call 0428 973 602.

From Hyden head to Kondinin, then Kulin, Wickepin and Narembeen. As Possum says, free camp there and on to Williams, then Collie. Magic free camp at Stockton Lake.Good luck! Cheers

You can come off the Eyre Hwy at Norseman.   Then there is a unsealed Road called the  Granite Woodlands Hwy". It is usually kept in very good condition. It goes straight through to Hyden. There are a couple or three free camping areas but I suggest "The Breakaways"

But Esperance and surrounds is certainly worth seeing,  and all along that southern coast to Augusta. Great part of the world. Actually we are heading from South Perth (home) to the Denmark area   tomorrow  camping out a couple of nights on the way.

Sandi, fill your wallet up before you hit Mark Up River (margaret river). Esperance is awesome and try the best chicken satay sticks ever at the french hot bread shop.

Way back I used to operate a bulldozer for a chap named Ben Mouritz, now deceased, who campaigned for many years to have a road built direct from Norseman to Hyden.

In 1978 he gave me the job of cutting a track through the scrub, starting from the Hyden end,to facilitate the building of the road and I spent much time out there, but the road still was not built for many years, finally being officially opened, by Ben, in 2000.

It's an OK road, with 250km of dirt and the last 50km to Hyden is bitumen. Dirt is corrugated, and OK for about 80kmh, but virtually impassable after rain. Saves about 100km in comparison with other routes.

However, the Dundas-Lake King Road is probably best ignored, as it is very rough with potholes over 600mm deep. Yes, 600mm, and impossible to use after rain. When I drove it I travelled for over 200km without seeing another vehicle, so not a good place to break down!

Also has a 5 ton limit.

As Mike says, Esperance is well worth visiting, and the coast road is great. Good luck! Cheers

There is a picnic area about a km west of Wave Rock with a very nice walk to the rock. Rather convenient, I will leave it at that!

Also another interesting area from memory 10 or so km north of wave rock. Worth visiting while in the area.

In the vicinity there is a hugh gravel pit where we stayed overnight, just google the aerial map of the area (did the area in 2018).

We did Australia's Longest Shortcut in 2019 West to East, plenty of 2wd cars out there. As long as it is not wet it will be fine. Just book the permits online for NT & WA, easy, & stay out of the towns overnight. There are no issues with fuel (but do watch jerry cans while not remote) even petrol as in our situation. Get TPMS & a second spare wheel (which you are probably smart enough to have anyway) for more options & peace of mind.

We would do the Great Central Road again anytime.
