advice re car storage and licencing

Hi I am a Kiwi nomad I like to get to Aus as often as possible (kids are there) I have sold my motorhome in NZ now my wife and I have worn it out and would like to travel OZ until I wear it out (if possible) or were worn out. We find that car and motorhome rental is a bit prohibitive and limiting as you can only drive on certain roads (no unsealed roads). Our intent is to buy a reasonably new car Pajaro or equivalent hopefully a 5 seater you can only buy 7 seaters in NZ.

Here is what we want to do we fly into somewhere the car is pic it up drive off into the sunset (keeping an eye out for roos) when we have had enough we store it where we end up and fly out ,our next visit we fly in and continue our road trip,we stay in hotels, motels road houses, campsite cabins and when were realy strapped in the back of the car (as kids we travelled the length of europe northern Norway to Gibraltar in an old rangerover)

We have worked out our accomodation costs and with the sale of our MH in NZ and a downsize property wise we will be good for a couple of years,we worked on topping up what we would pay for a site for a motorhome and just pay the extra for whatever accomodation is available at this time site costs in NZ are a bit expensive and some have very poor amenities

What are storage costs and could you give some advice as to car registration maybe insurance, etc.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Forum guggerlugs.

Being able to fly in to where you left your Ozzy unit and continue seeing Australia is a Fantasy unless you have someone in Australia drive your unit to wherever you want to continue your journey from, you will have to fly to an Australian Capital City from NZ then use internal flights if available to get to starting point.

Every State in Australia has different vehicle registration costs varying from Low $100's to over $1,000 in NSW - Insurance costs also vary dependent on Postcode. Cheapest combination of both is South Australia I believe.

Perhaps if your Ozzy based friends/family has a rural property - that would be where it would be prudent to use as a vehicle storage solution.

Vehicle storage costs in Australian Capital cities range from $150 to $1,000's per week.

A warm welcome from me also, guggerlugs

Many years ago, I worked with a Kiwi, who had come over to western Australia, and purchased a brand new Valiant car

The method behind the madness, was (at that time), if you owned the car for a number of years, there would be no import duties, when he took it back to New Zealand

He paid to have it stored with RAC (in Perth WA), they started it up every so often, as it was a long term storage, while he was working fly in fly out

It is possible that a motoring organisation may be doing the same thing

I am led to believe that in South Australia, (I heard this second hand, as I do not live in South Australia), when the rego runs out, you can just tell them you are no longer using the vehicle, keep the plates on the vehicle, then go in, and pay for the next length of rego

Perhaps a South Aussie resident can confirm/deny this story

Hope that there are many good road trips ahead of you

I am only considering flying to major cities fly to perth pickup car then on to next city the kids are in Canberra "brrrr" and Armidale the only two places I have seen frozen puddles since leaving the UK 40 years ago,I am not considering buying anything but a 4wd I am onto my second pajaro great car on and off the road.

Just sold my motorhome and the ballance will buy me a low mile car with cash spare and what is in the piggybank to see me travelling around OZ for quite a while.

If you buy a rig the cost absorbed by it would definately be a disadvantage, imagine cost of rig, extra fuel pulling it,campsite fees and from what I have read on the forum difficulty finding sites. If I use the rig money I can add it to what a site fee might so I can stay in motels ,pubs and camp cabins and occasinally a bloody good hotel plus if we want to find a site with an onsuite and sleep in the car also because a rig is going to be larger,to store a just car will save on that too.

Hi guggerlugs

Wish you all the best on your future plans

Unfortunately I live 200 kilometres away from the city of Perth, so I am unable to help on the whereabouts/prices of storage facilities

Except to say, that the airport in Perth, does have long term car parks for cars, but I have no idea of the cost

Perhaps the airports at other major city's, have the same sort of long term car parks

It may pay to google, airport long term car parks

Hi Tony thanks for that,do you have storage where you live, although I will be flying into major cities it does not mean I would be storing in the city you would be surprised how far you can go an a myki in Melbourne and most other OZ cities have as good transport systems, unlike NZ our rail is rubbish.

Have you investigated self storage places such as Kennards? Their prices for a single garage vary a lot from location to location, but maybe $600 per month as a guide in Sydney. You can search for locations and see the prices online. Maybe others may be cheaper ... I have never used such facilities. Just do a search for "self storage".

Otherwise, if it is OK to be left in the open, maybe some caravan parks would be happy for you to park it there. Probably more luck with the independent ones.

 Hi guggerlugs

I am not aware of any vehicle storage facilities in my area

Up to now, I have never had to look for storage facilities, as no one has complained about my motorhome, being on the footpath
