On a recent trip berween murray bridge & bordertown I had a passenger side tyre on the van delaminate, pulled up with no dramas but road side of van was barely inside the fogline because of the STUPID wire barriers, good fun in the dirt changing the tyre, road trains rocking the van (100kph road) as they passed even thou, they moved over when they could, rant over Joda.

Plenty of the S... around here as well, and no chance of pulling up with any safety at all, you would not even get off the road at all. Then when it is ivariably hit , takes months to get fixed. A nasty cost cutting exercise and a plum job handed to a " mate " I reckon .

Wodonga to Beechworth, Hume Freeway etc etc. ( both sides of the river)

Motorcyclists often refer to those wire rope barriers as 'cheese graters'. I cannot understand why anyone ever thought they were a good idea.

The same has been happening in the West. Barriers built close to the lanes with no hope of pulling in in the case of an emergency and the barriers go on for miles. The stupidity of so called road engineers these days defies belief.

I knew someone would say keep going to a better spot, we were going up a hill slowly with flashers on, could not see any place better for klicks ahead, stuff up the alloy rim to boot with virtually no tyre left on it, wifey stood down the road a bit which caught drivers attention which helped Considerably, barriers appear to do nothing for road safety on this particular stretch of road, let me know when it happens to you Basher, Joda

Like you, I expected some expert  would say, after careful consideration, that you should have kept going "to a better spot".

You have stated that you could see no better place for "klicks ahead" and that you were wary that you would "stuff up the alloy rim",both being potential hazards which would have been obvious to any clear-thinking individual.

You seem to have handled a potentially dangerous situation very well, with the support of your wife. Well done!

Let us hope that you never again have to deal with problems created by office jockeys who seem unable to anticipate potential hazards, and take measures to minimise them. Cheers.

Without debating the issue of the thread, a bit of history re these barriers.

They were developed I believe in Germany in the late 1980s. The safety idea was that these are an energy absorbing system, and unlike the common metal barriers, are designed to prevent vehicles suffering major damage endangering the occupants, and to absorb the impact and stop the vehicle being catapulted back across the road into oncoming vehicles. If a vehicle does hit it, it rarely if ever is able to go over the fence, and the fence is more easily repaired, staying more complete than hard metal armcoes.

Judging from the amount of this type of barrier around the country, it is either very effective, or the company employed exceptional sales people.

They are also a leg remover for motorcyclists, as well as losing your head if you slide into them. They only work for cars and trucks.

In my opinion those rope barriers that are being deployed by councils and authorities are useing the excuse that its to protect the vehicle occuptant in dangerous bends etc, so why are they deployed straight streaches of roads, its to protect the enviroment, they dont want you pulling up because of the native grasses and trees.

I don't like them either, but, I think I would rather hit the rope barrier than come to a sudden stop wrapped around a tree.

Magnarc, I think he chose that name for a purpose and he intends to live up that purpose by making insulting, derogative and nacissist remarks. Remembering some previous nasty comments I just had a look at a few of his recent posts. He lives up to his name.

Exactly Cuppa and that is why they are banned in some countries in Europe.

Furtherore, you will see that the steel barriers are now having an additional barrier installed lower down so as to reduce the risk to motorcyclists.
