TSR ( Traffic Singe Recognition )

As a lot of new vehicles are now fitted with a traffic singe recognition camera and can actively show the last speed limit singe that you passed. I am just wondering
If anybody knows of a stand alone unit that you could fit in your windscreen to perform this function. I was thinking maybe something like a dash-cam or a satnav unit.

I am aware there are some apps that can be set up using a mobile phone but I would much rather just find a plug and play unit if there is anything out there.

The satnav in the Patrol indicates speed limits. I am aware that the units in the Prado also have the speed limits on screen, how old is your Cruiser? I'm sure that you would be able to fit a GPS speed warning.

I think what Landy wants is sign recognition. So if you go through some roadworks it will show what the last sign detected, rather than what the usual speed limit is. Also, speed zones change and maps are often well out of date. It's very easy to miss a sign either entering such a zone, or wondering if you are still in it.

I had a custom mod from a later model installed in my PX2 Ranger. The warning limit for overspeeding is customisable. I set it a few K's over the limit so it only flashes if I am at risk of being booked. The mod I have causes the detected speed sign to fade the longer it is since seeing a sign. I would like it on longer. Something to consider if the OP finds something to do the job.

As you say Are We lost. I have a late model Hyundai Santa Fe highlander that I use as my daily drive but although it has a good sat-nav that shows speed limits and is updated every year, it still cant keep up with the speed limit changes and can't be trusted. I have driven a few cars with the TRS built in over the last 4 or 5 years and so far I have been very impressed with all of them.

Thanks Possum I do have sat-navs that show speed limits but would much prefer a unit that reads the actual limits from beside the road. if there is such a beast available
as a stand alone unit.

Back in the day we had the kids calling the speed limit signs - Minties were the rewards, which kept the system working at its peak. I have not seen any other autonomous method of warning.

Highways are mainly utilising point to point cameras now - they can be programmed to allow for temporary speed restrictions in work zones etc. These are a greater revenue raiser than relying solely on Traffic Division and they can also pick up on stolen plates/cars.

A friend's new EV apparently uses GPS location to determine the speed limit, and along a local 80 km/hr street will detect a nearby 20km/hr zone and therefore sets off the overspeed warning all the time. It drives her nuts.

The one they were designed for.

A number of cars these days have traffic sign recognition built into their navigation/entertainment systems, it uses a camera to read the sign and displays the result. It was an option on mine when I bought it seven years ago, but I didn't take it. For an aftermarket solution, I understand some dashcams have the feature, should be able to find those that do with a bit of Googling.

Thanks Derek, the trouble I find with with Gps units is the software cant keep up with the constant changing of speed limits. there are a number of roads in
our area that have been changed from 100 to 80 but even 2 years later and with 2 updates the sat-nav in my car is still showing as 100 KPH.

When we were in the UK recently we had a Renault Kaptur, this had speed sign recognition, one problem was when were in Scotland there were speed signs in some areas for trucks that were a lot lower than normal speed signs and the car kept picking them up and warning we were speeding, the other problem it would read the speed signs on side roads that veered off the main roads at an angle and continue to warn we were speeding until we came across a normal speed sign. The built in GPS must have been using the same reader as well and was telling us we were speeding. The stand alone GPS I have here tells me the speed limit but does not read the signs, my dash cam does read the speed signs and can tell me if I am too close the the car in front, and if I am too close to the lane lines, but I switched them off, mainly because I can drive.

Thanks Oxleigh It sounds like your dash cam may be able to do what I am looking for what brand is it, and No I don't need to be told when I'm to close to the car in front or the lane markings.

Brisbane traffic singing, in other words audible, sign(s) for the infirm, in principle more or less dementia:

The singing options for speeding to ignore signs! wink wink wink

Chuck the dashcam TRS (Traffic Sign Recognition)!

I think it would be well worth having Jeepnudger . Australia are so tight with there speed limit sing's especially in country area's you can sometimes travel many kilometers without passing one . I have only driven 2 or 3 cars with it in and then only for a couple of hours each time, but so far have found it remarkably accurate.

I have only just bought a new D Max ute and I like the sign reading application.
Having said that I do not rely on it, no substitute for watching the road and signage.
Could save one dollars whilst traveling but seeing as the last time I was booked was 1974 ($10) then I don't worry too much about coppers. If you drive within the speed limits and watch the road it is possible to avoid trouble.
The road speed limit sign recognition is novel for me but I am not big on the line recognition that directs me back into my lane.
I turn it off. I can drive a vehicle and don't need some bl**dy computer to tell me how to drive.
If I could disconnect it I would because I don't trust computers and reckon A.I. in my ute could put me where I don't wanna be!!!!
Also hate a robot checking to see if I am a robot by making me recognise zebra crossings and bl**dy bicycles to login to some obscure application!!!
The issue I find with line recognition on my Western roads is a) some potholes take up my lane and if no-one behind or in front I can weave in and out of them using both lanes b) any big trucks sporting a bulldozer, ag spray unit or a mining truck coming the other way I can leave the road at my whim c) some rural roads are so skinny, there is a need to drive on different sections of the road if recognising a dip or depression that is not yet a major pothole.
I do like the "ding" when just exceeding the limit by 2 or 3K's though.
It should come with rear road spikes though that drop out automatically to snap the buzz box on my dinga tailgating pushing you when one is doing the speed limit !!!!!

My record is not as good as yours rmoor its only 25 years since I last had a ticket biggrin and I'm not keen on getting another one just yet. The days are gone when I used to stretch the speed limit as far as I possibly could.

One of the most annoying pieces of technology in my regular drive is the auto braking in reverse, if the cross traffic alert starts beeping even if it is being set off by a car traveling on the other side of the road and nothing to do with you, it will apply the brakes and stop you from reversing until the vehicle has passed.

Sorry Landy, I have been offline for sometime, too busy to check all the sites, it's because I am retired and spend all my time on my projects, traveling with the van and visiting relo's and doing what my wife tells me. The camera is called a  "NEXTEK", It has 2 cameras, one front and one fitted to the rear of the car. The screen is fairly small and hard to see while driving, and the best place to fit is in front of the internal rear vision mirror, so for me it is redundant because anywhere else is cluttering up the vision area as I have a large GPS and a screen for the camera on the rear of the van while we are towing. I turned off these setting as they kept ringing and dinging and I found it distracting, my GPS has an over speed chime that goes off at 5 km/hr over the speed limit, but some of the speed limits change so they are not always accurate, If I see a limit that is wrong on the PS I can pinpoint it on the GPS and the next upgrade it sends the info to the company and they check and make changes on the maps.

Maybe something like this. !!

https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N8DH00BWLT9?hl=en-au&gl=AU

Turn your Windows 10 device into a driving assistance system worth thousands!

REAL TIME SPEED LIMIT TRAFIC SIGN RECOGNITION

Using the device camera, iSpeed scans for speed limit signs on the road while you are driving.

When a speed limit sign is recognised, the voice assistant alerts the driver announcing the speed limit (e.g. Speed Limit Fifty).

The sign scanning can be enabled/disabled by tapping the button Camera

Can recognise only speed limit signs, which are displaying the limitation within a red circle.

For better recognition move the zoom slider up to the maximum value supported by the device.

REAL TIME SPEED TRACKING

Using the device embedded GPS sensor or external Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, iSpeed tracks the speed and displays the data on the device screen.

The voice assistant alerts the user, when the speed reaches the next higher speed range (e.g. If the previous speed reading is 48km/h and the new value is 52km/h the assistant announces Fifty-two).  This way the user always knows their current speed range (e.g. 50-60km/h, 60-70km/h, etc), without the need to check the vehicle speedometer.

To select the device embedded GPS sensor as a speed data source, tap GPS button.

To select an external Bluetooth OBD2 adapter as a speed data source, tap OBD2 button.

To display and announce the speed in miles per hour, tap on the MPH button.

The iSpeed current speed value can differ from your vehicle speedometer. The reason is that iSpeed is showing the true speed and most of the car manufacturers deliberately calibrate their speedometers to show higher value than the true vehicle speed.

LUCY

When enabled Lucy is waiting for voice commands.

On voice command Lucy, speed, Lucy replies with the current speed (e.g. 60).

Tap Lucy button to enable/disable Lucy.

USAGE

iSpeed was designed primarily to assist vehicle drivers and help to prevent speeding. It helps the drivers to focus on the road instead checking the speedometer all the time.

iSpeed also can be used in many sports where knowing the current speed is valuable (e.g. biking, skiing, snowboarding, running etc)

Notes:

The app requires the device to be attached to front shield or dashboard. Proper alignment is essential for a good detection rate.

Please be aware that visual recognition will never be 100% correct, and that the displayed speed limit might not be correct for the current situation.

Most cameras have limited detection rate at night time or low light.
