they may have been sleeping to close to the tug for the doors to lock and the ignition is ready to go a bit of a problem with the keyless entry and push button starts

No, it was simply that they left the keys in the car while they slept in the trailer, it was an older car without keyless entry.

It looks like a Patrol, with the useless rear bumper tail lights that didn't meet Oz design rules at the time ( too low )

I had a 80 Series for years and a mate had a Patrol...he got sick of me commenting about that flaw.

Its the top lights that dont work, not compliant because of the spare tyre on the barn door, the bumper lights are the ones that work.

Maybe they were technically within 3 metres of their car, but there are fines for leaving car unlocked.

Don't leave car windows open either

Queensland

' Same rules as NSW, but 5cm allowable window gap. Fines up to 20 penalty units - or a staggering maximum penalty of $2874 '

Gee, leaving the keys in the car would spoil the fun that our kiddo-crims get when they break into a house to get the keys, often under threat of violence from the sleeping inhabitants.

It was an expensive mistake by these young travelers but at least they still have their lives, car & basics of the trailer.

For someone who could not distinguish, that the vehicle they were stealing, had an erected camping trailer attached

They were either the low end of the low life, or pissed/drugged out of their brain

I hope whoever was responsible are found, and made an example of, as one or both, of that young couple, could have lost their lives

I heard the culprits lived nearby where the rig was stolen from and are known to police. "conduct endangering life" comes to mind but we know what will happen...

Oh no, not being slapped with a limp lettuce leaf, how cruel, how barbaric.

Offence to leave car unlocked (3-meter rule) and again keys left in car.

Wouldn't like to be relying on insurance either!

My guess is they were well aware of what they were doing, and they did so as a prank.
