Water Heater

Hi, I've never had a caravan with hot water and shower, my question is if you are in a caravan park hooked up to their water, does that mean that the caravan water heater cannot heat the water. Regards Mick

Most water heaters in vans would be able to run on 240 volts or LPG. In mine, there is a circuit breaker for 240 volts so when plugged into the caravan park power it automatically heats.

For times when there is no 240v available, I run it on gas. There is a switch on the wall for that.

If you come back with details of the heater that is installed we can advise further.

Hi Mick,

Irrespective whether you are connected to CP water or not the van heater will heat water either using the CP water or the van tank water.

The caravan water heater (which can often be switched between either gas or electric) will heat your water as long as water is connected to your caravan either from the caravan park or via your water tanks.  The water tank pump must be on to draw water from your tanks.  Most caravans will need to use gas to heat their water if they are not connected to 240v but as in my case, if you have a powerful inverter and enough battery power, and your electric water heater is connected to a power point that draws from your battery via your inverter, then you can also heat water without being connected to 240v power.

As for most things, operation will depend on the electrical setup in your caravan e.g. batteries, inverters and solar.

A pity there doesn't appear to be a compact heat pump hot water system for caravans.

It's basic technology. Would also be good for apartments where you simply do not have the space for a >220L hot water heat pump system.

My parents installed one in the home in the early 1980s. Brilliant bit of kit.

Whatever tank you use, try to get a stainless steel tank, they have a much longer life. Just installed an 80L SS HWS. 12 year warranty. They also have better standby heat loss properties.

and should be fitted by a qualified plumber and electrician.

I used the same plumber for new replacement tank from just over a decade ago.

Last time he oxyacetylened all the joints with high temperature solder (more or less effectively welding connections), I have done first year both arc & oxyacetylene welding.

This time all the joints were crimped with battery tool.

Another plumber redoing some common property work on out block of units also crimped all the connections. Have known them for decades (currently have 2 female plumbers working for him, they are very good... & not only in plumbing!).
