From AGM to Lithium

Hi Gang,

I am upgradiing from AGM to lithiiums.  I have these currently installed but seeing as the lithium have battery management systems inbuilt I was wonderiing if these things are stilll required?  Thoughts?

Looking at your photos I have no idea what the top one is but the battery protector lower in the photo is not connected anyway.

That is correct the LiFePo4 BMS should disconnect on low voltage to protect the battery.

Some BMSs do fail, so as a secondary measure you can always use it provided the voltage cut offs can be set at a higher voltage

than the BMS.  It it appears they can.

The top device is a diode, the paper tag appears to say car, possible to prevent voltage feedback. I would not use with new Lithium set up as long as suitable charging equipment is in place.

I wish that I had not been talked into using Lithium rather than AGM.

Agree, if it works why change it, & by default one has a jumpstart system.

If it is a weight issue, change it, but do it properly with quality products, failed rubbish products in a remote environment. Most learn the first time!

Make sure solar controller is suitable for lithium.

Why is that JayDee?  Would you care to enlighten us because there are thousands upon thousands all over the world that depend on lithium batteries.

I see that I provided some information on another thread for you when you asked about LiFePO4 and inverters so did you run into problems?

Here is a video of a newly released lithium battery.
It has it's own management system.
What is interesting is the communications port which to me indicates that the makers envision a future enhancement to permit connecting batteries in series to facilitate 24 and 48 volt systems.
