How to start a/c on generator

If you are having trouble starting your a/c on the genny, try this. It is the combined current draw of both fan and compressor at start up that trips the overcurrent protection on medium gennys. Try running the fan only for a few moments before switching to cool. This way you only have two individual startups and I have been able to do this with my older van for last 6 years. Once the ac is going the current draw is well within the capacity of my 2000 Honda.

For someone who has not run their aircon with a generator, does that mean stopping the aircon while running on "fan only" beforehand, so the aircon is already set for a "fan only" start?

No leave fan running, then kick in compressor.

Not wrong there Doug, then again if enough red the night before you can keep it going till breakfast time and only then they won't know whether they have a headache from the red or the genny    smilebiggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I think we are on the same track.  I am meaning that if the a/c is running, turn the system to "fan only" before shutting down the whole system.  Then when you wish to run the a/c, the system is already set to "fan only" rather than fan plus compressor. Our a/c needs power to change the modes

Bloody website. Having another go. Heres a better explanation. Set your temp well above ambient if heating and start ac. Only fan will run. Now set temp lower to whete you want it without turning ac off and compressor will start. Since fan is already started up your genny should be able to handle the reduced draw when two motors are trying to start simultaneously.

Just as a small help. Make sure that your Hot water service 240v is turned off. And perhaps the fridge is turned onto gas.

All this will reduce the load on the generator.  And it is also advisable to run the genny for a few minutes so that it warms up before turning the aircon on.

Also the advice from Brodie is applicable.
