I'm wondering what the road condition from Armadale to Grafton is like going through Ebor and Nymboida. The maps I have are 25 years old and still show gravel road in some sections. Also are there many rest stops this way as google maps show very small towns along the way. Feedback will be appreciated.
The road is fully sealed. It is pretty windy and steep in sections, and logging trucks are common on it. Wikicamps shows several rest areas but I've never stopped in any. Personally towing our van we would instead take the longer but much easier route up to Glen Innes and then across on the Gwydir Highway which has a lot less turns and is a wider road.

Hi Pete, maybe it's time to update the maps mate?

My maps are 2018, they seem to be fairly accurate.
I like driving those off beaten roads where there is character, dips, slow corners, just drive to conditions and at the moment throw in a bit of rain.
We are presently near Ebor, about halfway towing our 2.7 tonne caravan.
I've decided to go through Dorrigo instead on the way up and will most probably come back through Glen Innes. I zoomed in on the road from Grafton to Glen Innes and it appears that there is a reasonable climb in about the centre of the trip. How steep is this and will it be any concern for towing a 22 ft van.

Hi Black Pete. I have travelled the Gwydir Highway recently and it is pretty straightforward. The road is in good condition and there are places to stop along the way plus plenty of overtaking lanes to let the faster traffic through. The climb over the range is not difficult. Just take it easy up the hill and you will be fine. I have an Isuzu and tow a Windsor which is about 18 foot long and weighs about 2.3 loaded up and I do it comfortably. It would be my choice by far.
I have also done the Tenterfield to Casino run on the Bruxner and it is pretty windy in parts with a big pull up and over the Richmond Range. There is a fair bit of flood damage and road work happening at present.
The Oxley Highway from near Tamworth to Wauchope is really winding when you reach the last 60 kilometres before Wauchope. It is also closed several hours a day whilst they repair the landslip.
If you want the easiest route across it is the Golden Highway through Merriwa to Hexham. Not many hills, plenty of trucks and miles out of your way.
