Parking for the Day in Canberra

Hi Folks,

I'm hitting the road for work, calling in on a few customers.

This means spending a full day in Canberra at a meeting and parking my van (LWB Sprinter) somewhere nearby if I can.

I'll be in the area of the corner of Northbourne Ave and  Rudd Street which I guess is Braddon?

I thought about a Coles carpark or something, but might get a ticket being there all day.

Happy to use paid parking if I can find one where I will fit. (7m long)

Or maybe park a bit out of town and Uber in.

Any thoughts?

My recent experience of parking in Canberra, in a car, had me going in circles a bit........

I find Canberra fairly tight in the Ranger at 5.4 metres long with regards parking. There is a shopping ctr plus Costco and Bunnings with large free parking areas over at Madura Park near the airport that you would find something and be fine for the day if you wanted to Uber in to your meeting. I have parked there for most of the day doing the shopping, lunch and Bunnings without issue.

Good tip, thanks.

Make the most of Bunnings parking before they start charging like in Artarmon, Sydney.

Pretty much all the major shopping ctrs in Canberra are paid parking and the bays are small. The Ranger is a monster to park in many of them and more than fills the bay. Finding anything in the CBD to park a 7 metre long van would be pretty much mission impossible. Majura Park is one of the exceptions. I spend a bit of time in Canberra each year visiting family so have gotten to know the lay of the land reasonably well.

Have a look at the tram service in Canberra. Daily fare is $9.00 (also includes bus travel). You could park the Ranger out of busy areas and catch he tram or bus to the city centre.

I live in Canberra and find it nearly impossible to find any parking areas which will fit a 7m long car/caravan combo. The Bunnings car park at Madura Park is one of the few free parking areas. I assume it is still all day parking. I know the Bunnings at Tuggeranong has introduced a 2 hour limit on parking, with cameras to ensure that it is kept to.
Another possibility is to park at the large car park at Anaconda Gungahlin along Franz Bormann Close, which has long trailer parking spots, and catch the tram from Gungahlin station into Braddon.

I also live in Canberra and haven't really gone looking for a place to park the tug and van combo. I'd be a little careful where you park at Majura Park, as some areas have time limits. I'm out there a lot and got the shock of my life recently when I saw parking inspectors booking people. I expressed surprise to one of them, and the response was that the offenders where people working out there, and the businesses were unhappy about customers not being able to park. Costco was mentioned in particular. This was in the small parking area between Costco and Woolies. It's a lot easier to find a spot in that area now, for some strange reason. I think you'd have to be unlucky to get booked, as I got the impression that inspectors were only there when someone complained. The cark park can get pretty full on weekends

I'm less sure the parking restriction in the area around Bunnings, a little to the north. There's certainly more space there and it's less full. There's also the IKEA car park across the road. I haven't noticed whether there are any restrictions there. Some of these carparks may present navigational challenges for a van.

I don't think that the OP is talking about a car caravan combo. I think it is one of the very large long wheelbase delivery vans such as a Mercedes Sprinter or the large Iveco. They are very long and large and most parking areas just don't cater for them. My daughter lives in Canberra and when she has reason to do so has taken her horse float into Majura Park and has managed to always find parking there by pulling through two bays.

You're right, a Sprinter. Sorry. Certainly easier and Majura Park Bunnings or IKEA should be ideal. There is parking around Yarralumla Bay that I think is untimed last I looked and where you could fit a Sprinter. Would be closer to Civic.

I really like Canberra as a city. Other than my native Perth, it is my favourite of all the Australian capitals, I have spent time in all of them. We are usually there for about 4 to 6 weeks every year visiting the daughter and SIL and really enjoy our stay there.

Thanks for the tips folks. I ended up overnight at EPIC.
Nice campground and really helpful staff.
I ubered back and forth to my meeting, though that cost more than the campsite!
Might look at bus from EPIC next time.
But it worked out fine.

From EPIC you could have caught the tram. Runs pretty close to there.
