Isuzu M-UX 4x4 LS-T

Hi all

We are new to having a "bigger" rig (weight wise anyway).  We have had an Avan Aliner for a long time but are in the process of upgrading to something a bit more luxurious (ie. ensuite).  I'm trying to get an idea of all of the costs that I am up for.

At the moment we are planning to buy a new Isuzu M-UX 4x4 LS-T as the tow vehicle.  The new caravan will have a ATM of 2800 and ball weight of 280.

My question really is do I have to do anything more to the tug in terms of airbag suspension etc?  All of the ratings of the vehicle say no I'm just wondering what the brains trust think.

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi Orlo

I have an earlier model 2017 MUX, I have airbags, I think they are a good investment for only a few hundred dollars, you will have a bit of gear in the back as well as the 280 kg tow ball weight so easy to maintain your ride level, then you can deflate them when not required and have stock suspension.

I would recommend you have some way to monitor your transmission temp, then if you notice the temp increasing beyond your comfort zone fit a transmission cooler. I have a scangauge and a transmission cooler, my trans temp is always below my coolant temp , not so before I fitted the cooler.  Ian

Hi Orlo, Had Thor Airbags on the Dmax for 12 years, they are a great addition. They are not there to carry all the weight but to assist the existing suspension. I need only 12 - 15 lbs pressure to bring the tow bar back up to height, which also puts your head lights back to the right height.

I am not sure whether it applies to newer model MUXs or not. I sort of recall that Isuzu recommended not to use a Weight Distribution Hitch with a Isuzu manufactured tow bar. I understood that some cracking of parts of those tow bars had occurred. I believe other non Isuzu bars were ok though, say, for example, Hayman Reese.

Maybe that issue does not apply with newer models of MUX. Ozisuzu forum members could help with this.
