single beds to replace queen

I have a Starcraft 2010 model caravan with Queen bed. I now find the queen is no longer serviceable and wish to replace it with 2 x single beds. Allows more room to move. I would like to hear from anyone who has done this modification, and some comments on associated costs.

Many thanks

Hi Keiron

We changed our caravan queen bed to a caravan double bed.

It all started with a mattress that was terrible to sleep on.

Looking about we found a custom made mattress manufacturer near us.

Secondly we changed the size of the bed to a double, we are not large people and sleep well on our second bed at home which is a normal double size.

I replace the heavier steel lift up frame with a aluminum one gaining room down the side of the bed giving much easier entry for my wife and the bonus was we wer able to extend the bed.

Bed, 1850 long x 1320 wide. Gained 100 plus 40 the other side. Very happy the wife gets down her side with ease.

Cost, mattress, a lot. Frame $240 approx.

Sold the mattress and frame at a give awa

Thank you for your comments. I will be changing mine so that my son-in-law can travel with me at times, when wifey does not want to.

A very good reason to go single beds

I am surprised that our friend Dougwe has not made a comment.

Happy Easter.

G'day Radar, Long time no see mate. Hope you are both well.

Now. I read this post early this morning but as it was going from a Queen size bed to singles, I didn't reply however, I will tell my changes to explain my experience.

I had single beds built in my Aluminium tent during the build. The manufacturer didn't have any experience with single beds so had to explain what to do and pointed him in the direction of his opposition to take a peek.

All done and I was a very happy camper UNTIL about 2 years after getting my shiny new van I was diagnosed with bad Osteo Arthritis in both shoulders and right knee. This caused me to have to rethink the single beds as it was most uncomfortable. In my wisdom (never a good thing) I decided to change things around a bit and to save renovating the Aluminium tent and being a solo GN since losing my wife to that cancer thing, I got a king single and put East West, across van using the two built-in single base frames. That way things could go back to original at any time. I put a support in middle between the single bases to help.

Everything was as hoped and helped my problem at night. The thing I am finding now though, as I get older and no improvement with the arthritis is making the bed, so caused another problem. I have to climb over mattress and lift on long edge to change the fitted sheet. Flat sheets are worse so don't use them. Doona and cover on top. I just manage now but not sure for how much longer. I love my Aluminium tent and live in it full time and don't want that to change. When I have to get out of AT it will more than likely be into a nursing home, or I have ridden on ahead.

So, now you see why I didn't comment biggrin

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Hi Dougwee

My problem going from a queen to a double was very doable, use no new base material, a couple of handfuls of new screws which I had in a tin in the shed. The frame and Mattress were both new.

I could see and understand how Dougwee got away with his modification knowing his caravan.

At home Dougwee when I change the fitted sheet on our stupid big and heavy queen Mattress, I slide it around, so it is half hanging off the bed which helps a lot as my princess is not as capable as she once was with lifting.

Keiron, I think your modification is going to be hard work, just looking at my cabinet work in my caravan, it is all screwed from outside before the skin is added.

It will be good to see how you achieve this alteration.

Ralph.

Mine is two singles with a pullout to convert to a double. Only issue I have is because it uses the seat cushions, they are not very comfortable. One day I will get real mattresses....then its been ten years I probably won't. The singles work just fine for when I have a visitor.
