Currently in Stanley Tasmania for two nights and then heading further north.
Are you sure you mean north Ma? My recollection of Stanley is that it is on the north coast of Tassie, so any further north will be in Bass Strait!

When I looked at the map it looked like Smithton was a bit further north than Stanley, but then I could be wrong. Just ask Blue, I'm hopeless at reading maps and "Sally" the GPS is almost as bad as I am.....

Intentions. I may be taking a trip down to the west side of Melbourne sometime next week, sort of Coldstream area. My grandson Connah is down there with his mum visiting rellies for a few weeks. I think I go down through Shepparton, Nagambie, Seymour, Yea etc. Only ever been that way once before and I wasn't driving. Should be a nice trip. Will stay a while.
Marj - I don't think you will find any free camps @ Coldstream - sort of outer suburbia.

I will be able to park on the rellies land Helen . They said plenty of room. But would like to take my time and have a look on the way down so might look for a good free camp around Nagambie - Seymour area. Any ideas?

The drive from Seymour to Yea, Yarra Glen etc is very pleasant. That is the way we usually take the van to go north or west. The bush is recovering well from the 2009 fires, though scars still evident.
There is an excellent bakery in Yea - great source of lunch!
There is now a bypass route around Yarra Glen, but it is also worthwhile to go through the town and have a look.

I usually only drive through both places. There are lots of road works around Nagambie at the moment (freeway extension). There is a cpark but I know you prefer to free camp so you probably need to check out Camps Wide. Ditto Seymour - however you used to be able to camp out at King Parrot Creek which is not far from Seymour on the road to Yea.
Maybe other forumites might know of free camps around these areas??

Yes, I saw king Parrot Creek in my Camps 5, looked a good spot.
Will make a trip to the bakery in Yea too. Sounds promising.

It's a good trip John .. I did it last year .. A point of interest for you .. when you get up towards Broome about that time, and you're considering whether or not the 'big-wet' is over before continuing ..
Have a look around at the Dragon Flies that are buzzing about .. will always be heaps of them .. one day all of a sudden you'll notice nearly all the large ones have disappeared and replaced by little ones .. This will only happen when nature has told them the wet is over ..
I was quite intrigued when I saw all this happen ..

That's an interesting phenomenon when walking on Cable Beach in the morning.
I didn't see it when I worked inland from Derby or at Anna Plains, but it was the announcement of the end of the wet, even in 2000 when TC Rosita hit at the end of April that year.
Nature is great to observe.

In a few days I hope to be heading back to Macquarie Woods for about 3 weeks .. then to Parkes for Christmas .. departing after Boxing Day to head in the general direction of Tamworth to try and find a camp spot out at Chaffy Dam for another few weeks if I can.
Thats about as far north as I'll be travelling til after mid March as I will be attending my sons wedding down south of Sydney ..
Then .. April & May will see me primarily free-camping as I slowly head north following my nose ..

I'm home from Cooloola Cove.
Funny story...left my sisters this morning, got about 10kms along the road and got a phone call from her...'you've got my glasses!' 'No I haven't....oh! is that why I'm having trouble reading the signs...and my clip-on sunnies don't fit...okay, turning around now!'
