I have a GME TX3440 that has all controls in the handset so the main unit is out of sight. Less clutter in the cab.  Have picked up transmissions at 40/50  klm but you could be the other side of a 10 storey building and not get me.  Prior to that a Uniden. both good qualiity brands/units. These days most have open scan features. If uncertain start with a cheapy of ebay
cheers

Just make sure that the unit you buy is 5 Watts output.
Even a 5 W hand held with car kit & external antennae is good (and removable too)

Cheers,
Peter
